star wars rogue one teaser trailer

thats always been the archetype for most heroes of any movie, the only reason it is a problem is bc it is a girl.

Right, because Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Buffy, the Charmed witches, Alias, Dark Angel, La Femme Nikita, Bionic Woman, Star Trek Voyager, The Fifth Element, Xena and all the other countless, decades old stuff with female heroines never happened.

EP7 was pretty much a remake, and Rey a Luke replacement, so I was fine with it. But casting yet again a scrawny girl is kind of lame.

"Back in the sexist days" we had heroines like these:

Dude relax, there is nothing wrong with a female protagonist. However the "PC" as you, in my personal opinion you correctly call it, has gone too far. Apperantly the character Finn is also gay now, well, good for the writers to try to appeal to another audience. But this pretty much backfires... Movies like star wars will be watched for a longer time, and should not have to fit into "fashion or trends", nobody will remember "the kardashians" show 30 years from now. Why should Sci-Fi adapt to trending attention freaks? Those people tend to have the memory of a goldfish.

To come back to my previous reply on this topic, I would not mind if it was an adaption of Dark Forces, from the perspective of Jan Ors(I still have to see the official spelling of her characters name), with "Kyle Katarn" in the background. I would object if they enforced a female lead just to have a female lead.

I don't have a problem with female protagonists (or antagonists for that matter), quite opposite.

I am annoyed of the "scrawny girly rules all effortlessly" however.

What I am sick of of casting young pretty white girlies and calling that "diversity" or bold or whatever and making a huge hype of it. That's laughable and pisses me off. Almost thirty years ago bald muscled women blasted aliens to bits, yet putting trim twenty something models into a movie in 2016 is a courageous act or something. Give me break.

The main difference between heroes like the T2 Sarah Connor, Besson's Nikita and the 80s/90s John McClane is relatability. I can buy it that Sarah, Nikita and John went through some heavy shit that made them who they are. Regardless of any gender politics. I don't get the same feeling with these scrawny cutey model girlies. Their "I was daddy's darling" upbringing is engraved all over them.

I think that's the real core issue why these girlies cause a negative reaction in quite a many people. Them being female isn't the main issue which feeds those emotions.

"Sarah Connor"(Linda Hamilton) trained for only 6 weeks to get the muscular development you saw in T2(She used creatine, and she has a very slim build). For comparison; Chris Hemsworth trained for four months to get his "legendary fysigue" The media makes more out of it then what they actually had to do. He would be a laugh at a hardcore gym. The guy training for playing he-man(Yes, that movie is coming) is cutting down so he can be prince adam, this guy is willing to go all the way for a few seconds of fame, the guy who did batman also mutilated himself to fit into roles. Actors, it is their profession to be a special and inspiring person.

As for a female in a superhero role, I'd suggest getting "Chyna Doll" as Big Barda. But she does all the porn stuff these days...

Ok i will agree that the two characters are very similar. This u are right. I was more speaking about how so many people were mad about Rey being the lead in episode 7. Just cuz I thought she did a great job.
Thank you. I was starting to think maybe I had lost the ability to speak English, or something :). Though, to be fair, I did start off by pointing out only the fact that both characters were female, and only later did I go into the detail of what I mean by "cookie cutter characters" and all that.

It's just that when I see two characters like this in a row - and even if this new character is not like that, the trailer certainly tries hard to make them into a Rey clone - I have a hard time of seeing any positive motivations behind this. It feels like a cold, exploitative market-based decision - "hey, strong female characters are really hot right now, and Rey worked out so well, let's shove another one in there and see how we go!"

what is funny is as much as you say rey, the new girl, and young sarah connor all look alike. I would say that linda hamiliton and sigourney weaver look exactly the same probably bc james cameron the director of both aliens and terminator 2 liked women with muscles. he did date linda hamiliton after all for a while. my pt is in the 80s it was the trend to have muscular women in badass roles, now in the mid 2010's its in to have young skinny women as you put it, but their weight or muscle tone is not all that makes a badass. but for the record the reason nobody batted an eye is bc weaver and hamiliton were always the stars of alien and terminator, but omg replace the starring role in star wars with a female and watch the world fall apart

Well, and those young skinny know-it-all girls are getting tiresome.

Rey was sort of a Luke clone, so I am ok with her looks (the abilities are another matter). But the agent in Rogue One is stretching it quite a bit. I would have no problems if she would have been the Nina Myers (24) type or something in that vein. Yet we get again a cutey scrawney posh girl.

I am not talking strictly about muscle mass. Look at T2 Sarah Connor, John Mcclane, Nikita and Ellen Ripley and you see in their faces that they have an "edge" to them. It looked as if these people have experienced some things.

That edge is completely absent from these modern scrawney girlies. Even in "Underworld" the lead actress had a certain aurea of genuine ability that's completely missing from these young poshy 2010 girls.

to be honest when I first saw dasiey ridley as rey I thought she looked rather plain, not posh at all. if your talking looks yes rey and the new character from rogue one look somewhat similar, if your talking character traits and archetypes they are playing different roles. rey was the squeaky clean farm girl like luke. mean while this new girl is more of the anti hero, I mean the opening scene of the trailer is the narrator reading of her arrest record, that most def is not like rey at all. as far as the actress herself, I loved her in theory of everything so I know the girl can act.

rey- is a stereotypical hero like luke or superman or frodo aka the hero journey, or many other typical heroes found in literature. she is pretty virtuous and squeaky clean.
Ah. I see the problem now. Somehow, you manager to actually not watch Episode VII.

Jokes aside, all things considered, I think I'll just take myself out of this discussion now - I see no point whatsoever in carrying on.

So gender doesn't matter... until there are two women in succession, then it matters immensely.

People also seem able to assess a remarkable amount of Jyn Erso's character considering that she speaks a total of 11 words in this trailer...

The final scene is probably just a fake-out, given the dialog, but I'm hoping that she defects to the Empire and re-enacts the best parts of the TIE Fighter series instead.

I'm honestly kind of annoyed that it's an issue at all, and my comment about 'marketing decisions' wasn't meant to be either negative or positive. All trailers and teasers are a product of the marketing team taking a look at their product, deciding a) what footage is available/ready to show, b) what message they want to send about their product and c) who they want to reach with the advertising. To that degree this trailer works. I like it, and it has people talking about it. I'm not so cool with the way people are co-opting the narative to be about gender politics. That's stupid.

Teasers, by nature, tease and are often dishonest about the content of the movie. The sole intention of a teaser is to build interest. So as you mention a close examination of the Rogue One teaser it's impossible to determine much of anything about the movie. There's a bit of talk about the girl presumed (because of the structure of the teaser) to be the main character. But we really don't see her being the big bad-ass action hero everyone is assuming she is. There's one time in the trailer where she hit's a stormtrooper or two and then raises a gun. The trailer makes it look like she shoots something and blows it up, but she's not. It's a cut to a separate scene where someone is remote detonating an explosive:

The majority of the dialogue seems to be from a single scene but might even be a mixture of scenes. In the start of the trailer, Jyn is being brought *in cuffs* to what looks like the rebel base. The list of infractions is overlayed on top of this. The dialogue reminds me of that scene in just about every buddy cop movie from the 80s or the loose cannon spy movie where the commander reads out the officer's list of missdeeds right before either taking their badge away.

There's a bunch of other scenes of people fighting, none of which appear to have Jyn involved. She's not seen running towards the AT-ATs. She isn't seen in the short clip of the transport exploding, or with Forrest Whitaker. We do see her running away in what looks like a subway/elevated rail station, though it could just be the inside of an imperial base.

ROGUE ONE- A STAR WARS STORY Official Teaser Trailer.mp4_snapshot_01.12_[2016.04.11_20.04.56].jpg

And of course lastly she's seen in what looks like a Tie Fighter pilot's flight suit. Why is she in cuffs at the start? Is the offer of a job even made to Jyn? We don't actually see the character's speaking when the offer is made. For all we know, she really is an Imperial officer sent to infiltrate a rebel crew that the empire has gotten wind of their plans against the empire. Here whole arc could even be her having a change of heart after spending time with the rebels and seeing things from the other side.

It's probably not that, but the the trailer is vague enough that anything is possible.

I would say the same about you not seeing ep 7 or actually paying any attention to the rogue one trailer bc if you cant tell that rey is the typical hero and the new girl from rogue one trailer is being protrayed as an anti hero there is no hope for you. which does not shock me bc you didnt know that the manchurian candidate angle was a very common tv, movie, and book trope that has been used so many times it has a webpage dedicated to it. so adios my man

I read my last response again and quarto I was a little out of line so im sorry, but yeah im going to try my best and avoid you bc we plainly dont see eye to eye on anything. You think I dont know anything about good writing or character development and I feel the exact same way about you, probably the main reason I didnt enjoy any of the characters in standoff and lost interest in the game after chapter 3 or 4 I dont remember exactly where.

back to star wars Mace is it written somewhere that finn is gay, im really just asking? bc he was very obviously hitting or rey throughout the force awakens.

I don't understand why this got so heated so fast. We really don't know much about Rogue One yet. It was just one short trailer. Lets keep the peace guys. We all love star wars and if not we wouldn't be talking about it so passionately.

a good breakdown of the rogue one trailer for those that are interested

I've seen several of these and they all hit most of the same notes though this one has a bit more speculation/rumor than many of the others. Some of their guesses in this one are interesting. Also, most of these types of videos seem to miss the remote-detonation of the explosion and lump it in with Jyn taking out a couple storm troopers. It's not that surprising as the shadowy figure with the detonator is only on scree for a few frames.

My feelings as well. I have some strong opinions about Star Wars things but at this point, the whole of the discussion is pointless.
