Star Trek Legacy

I just barely got this game yesterday and am on the second mission. I really like the graphics and music of the game, but so far the gameplay has been frustrating getting used to.

I guess I expected flying the ships to be somewhat similar to flying a Longbow, but I should've known better. What's been hard for me is trying to keep up with all the commands during battle. Cause it feels like the battle is happening at a much faster rate than you are able to take actions.

And I'm not sure how best to proceed with fleets. I don't know if it's worth cycling back and forth through all the ships, or just to focus with one ship and let the rest of them do their fighting automatically. Then I got confused on the second mission cause the Vulcan chick said I could take my ships over to that repair depot to fix up, so I take my ships over there, and I'm not sure whether I need to beam over crews for all three ships, or what. Then as I'm trying to figure that all out, the mission fails because I didn't protect the Vulcan research base.

I really can see myself getting into this game, but it's been very hard getting used to. Any additional pointers would be greatly appreciated.

LOAF told me one thing thats saved my skin in this game above all else - "You're going to play most of the game from the map".

For example, on your first mission - select all your ships and then go to the map, as the ships come in to attack the base, use the cursor to click on one of them and all the ships will attack it.

Don't even bother repairing the starbase, its not worth the effort. It might take a try or two to figure it out - but once you know what you're doing, the level is a breeze.

Well so far, issuing commands from the map has made things easier. But one thing that I still don't get, is that when I tell my fleet to go attack a given target, they all will do so except for the Enterprise. Does that mean that the ship I have selected above all others is in my manual control and does not respond to automatic commands?

You still have to manually fire the guns for the ship you've selected on the map -- when you see the phaser and torpedo locks, squeeze the triggers.

I'm currently stuck on the planet fragment mission. LOAF is definitely right about this game being challenging in a good way. I like how I'm testing different methods for accomplishing this mission. Still hard as hell though.

So far, I send all my ships in (currently attempting with two Stargazers and two Apollos), to the right side of the fragments. Since the planet in the lower right always gets destroyed first. When the fragments are all clustered together like this, I can depend on the other ship's AI to do their job. But it also becomes less reliable as the fragments spread out.

I'm also having all power to engines since it doesn't take too much firepower to destroy the fragments and I speed is essential to pursuing these things. However, I'm still confused on warp speed. Sometimes when I wanna warp somewhere, my bar is green, but I have to keep holding it down it seems sometimes before the ship actually goes into warp.

I also thought having a turret in the white box in front of the planet would suffice in totally defending it, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

At any rate, this mission is a real doosy and I haven't even gotten to the part everyone else is talking about with the large fragment.

Edit: When I tractor those smaller fragments to run into the bigger one, do I just fly my ship straight into it?

Yeah, just tractor the fragement with your ship and fly it straight into the large one. Steer your ship directly for it, when you are hit it your ship will be forced around the asteroid while the smaller fragement will slam into the large fragment behind you. The large fragment should start showing damage then. I believe it takes 3-4 hits from smaller fragments to destroy it.

The first time i got to the larger fragment i was worried about running my ship into it. I tried tractoring a smaller piece and accelerating toward it then releasing the smaller piece before i got too close.....hoping the momentum would carry it into the large fragment. Didn't work.

I would love for this kind of game to be more open-ended like Privateer. Having a huge map of the Alpha quadrant and doing all kinds of business, getting to go wherever you like, etc.

Perhaps it is difficult for games to be so open-ended and remain interesting. Yet Privateer is an example of a good balance of this. Since you'll spend the first half of the game saving up for your ship and accessories, then the latter half playing the campaign. But I just can't stop thinking how cool a Legacy game would be if you were a privateer instead of a Starfleet officer.

Have you ever played Star Trek: Starfleet Command for the PC? There are three Starfleet Command games, but I am thinking of the first one. It is a little more open ended than Legacy and if you can, you may want to check it out.

The game takes place during the TOS time period and you can choose to play as a commander for one of six races: Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, Hydrans, and Lyrans. It is similar to Legacy in respects to the way you can purchase new ships using points you gain from being successful in missions. Each race has its own campaign, where after completing several standard missions you are recruited into that race's elite forces, which is where the real campaign for that race begins. Alternatively you can choose to remain outside the elite force structure of that race and continue in more standard missions such as attacking the enemy, convoy raids or escorts, battling pirates, or fighting large space creatures. Also, if become a member of a particular race's special organization and perform poorly, you can be kicked out.

You get a lot of freedom though in the game as you can take your fleets to different areas of your race's respective space....from the core, to the main colonies, to the frontier. Where you are reflects what you might encounter and the types of missions you will get. It also impacts what new ships will be available for you to buy. You can choose though what border you want to patrol, Klingon, Romulan, or if you are one of the other race's the federation border, and even invade their territory.

Its an older game, but it has pretty good graphics for when it was made. And it is similar to Legacy in the basic mechanics of the game...you control up to three ships of a given race and engage hostiles by controlling one ship directly and giving orders to the others. It also offers you more freedom in roaming around and exploring.

There is also a Star Trek MMORPG due out soon. IT is as open ended as World of Warcraft. Its listed in startrek.com's games section. So far I believe they are only calling it by it tentative title, Star Trek: Online. There are no screenshots as of yet I believe, but from what they have said about it sounds promising.

Wow the few screens there (and the officer concept art) are really nice. However I can't help but get that "sinking feeling" when hearing about STO. I just don't see it coming out... ever.

Wow those screenshots look great! I like the uniforms they have posted as concepts. the Vulcan, Terran, Andorian uniforms look cool, although I can't tell about the other guy. He looks like either a Tellarite or a Xindi Arboreal. Either way still cool. I didnt think there was any real progress made on the game, I guess I was wrong. I still hope they rename it from Star Trek: Online. I know its only the working title but still even as a working title the name sucks. I'm no fan of MMORPG's but I have a feeling I'm gonna be buying this one!

Is it possible to have two players battle each other in a split screen mode in the Xbox 360 version of Legacy? On the back of the box it says "1-2 players" but i can't select a second human player in skirmish mode. Am i missing something?

That looks like an interesting typo. If the game actually supported two players, it would say "Players 1-2" in green, but it just says "Players 2." If there's only one number after Players, it should be 1 and indicate that it's single player only on one system.

Ok, mine just says "Players 2" in green and then underneath it it says "online players 2-4" or something to that effect in orange. That is why i thought there was some sort of two player split-screen mode.

This is a common assumption - I think they posted an apology for the error at some point. There's no split-screen view.
