What type of sim missions do ya'll like?

Historical missions where you fly a rendtion of a great or epic battle in WC history

Gauntlet sytle missions

or Mission style where you fly a fairly generic mission like defense, nebula, asteriod, strike, patrol, etc.

If you can think of mission that doesn't really fit these types, then make a post.

a well crafted mission based on a wc historical event has the potential to be very pleasing...some the novel battles we've all thought about what it would be like to fly in...

When I hear about 'historical' missions, I think that someone is FINALLY going to script the Tarawa raid, or the battle of earth... or the defence of the Landreinch by Max Krueger

...I'm a dreamer.

That kind of historical mission was our original idea with Standoff's sim, but we ended up making missions based on nothing but fun factor instead.

I like sim missions that are designed to either help you develop a certain skill (attacking capital ships) or that are just for fun. Although I will say, I also like the idea of having "historical" missions.

There will definitely be a series of missions that acclaimate the player with the strengths and weaknesses of each Border World fighter used during the Ranger's Glory. There are also an relatively infinite number of sim missions allowed, so there could be any number of sim missions added throughout the series of episodes.

Judging so far from what I have seen in this poll. I will focus more on historical missions than generic or gauntlet, but please keep posting ideas for the historical missions.

I think a historical mission could be the most fun mission, but it would need to be very special compared to the other missions in a game. Though I would probably see it as the mission that I "liked the most", it would lose its luster if all of the missions were historical. There's something to be said for routine run of the mill missions for creating a sense of realism and creating a build up for the more important missions. Imagine how generic a game could seem if it had 10 straight historical missions- it could still be fun, but not AS fun IMO.

I think the "you're the only hope for saving everyone and if you screw up all is lost" thing is a bit overdone, so that's another reason why I might favor some missions that aren't critical to the war interspersed with major engagements.

True enough, but there aren't going to be that many historical missions to add into the simulator. At most, there will probably only be 2 per release. Of course that is probably going to end up being ten, but there are about 10 training missions (which highlight a particular ships strengths and weaknesses) along with 10 of other styles (mission, gauntlet, etc).

But please keep the historical mission ideas coming.

I think that the simulator should have one Confed gauntlet and one Kilrathi gauntlet just for practice, and should have training missions for the basic mission types--space superiority patrol, carrier defense, escort, capship/starbase strike, etc. A couple of recreations of famous battles would be nice too.

Especially if you can tie in a historical battle with some type of training purpose such as "carrier defense" or some other mission type from a famous battle.

Yeah, the point isn't necessarily that people want to play a whole bunch of historical missions. If we wanted a historical campaign, then we'd ask that the whole game be about that. The problem is that simulator missions can very easily become too basic and boring. The sim should be a trainer, but each training mission should have some underlying meaning. If this is a historical background, all the better.

great point and also the mission must be good enough were you would be willing to replay it at a minimum 10 times....but it should have the abilty to never get old

From an in-universe perspective, I would say that regular 'mission-style' simulator missions would be used for training, with perhaps some historical ones thrown in to help the rookie pilots avoid the mistakes of the past. IIRC, the first X-Wing novel used an incredibly difficult 'historical' mission as part of the screening process for Rogue Squadron candidates.

I see no real point in gauntlet-style missions, other than to follow gaming history/tradition of the arcade simulator from WC1.

That's an excellent point. Though I don' t like gauntlet-style missions, it seems to be a standard on confed simulators since you mentioned WC1 and I think there's one on the WC3 simulator as well. Gauntlets may not be much fun for 1 player, but you can imagine Confed pilots in the WC universe finding it useful for competitions, bets, and bragging rights.

*very big grin*
Makes one wonder who has the highest gauntlet skills here on the CIC, doesn' it?
