Secret Missions 1

Unforgiven

Spaceman
I'm playing SM1 for the first time in my life, and am I just a bad pilot, or is it insanely hard?!?
I'm currently stuck at the mission where I have to escort a captured Dralthi. First I get up against 2 Krant's and a Ralari, then I meet the Dralthi at Nav 2, accompanied by 4 unfriendly Dralthis, then at Nav 3... there's even more Dralthi (8?) and after a while another capship (I think it's carrier) jumps in, and god knows what else comes up after that (hopefully nothing).
All this in a *cough* mighty *cough* Scimitar!!!
How the heck am I supposed to do that? Either I get killed, the Dralthi gets killed or Bossman gets killed, and neither is acceptible to me.

And the mission before this one (destroy captured Drayman and a Ralari) I only got done by afterburning past the first Jalthi, quickly killing the drayman, afterburning to nav2, killing the Ralari, and afterburning back to the claw. Otherwise always me or Bossman got it... get it?

I enjoy a challenge, but after umpteenmillion attempts it gets boring.

Tis a cruiser, not a carrier... and you can see a few more of them if you return to Nav 1. :)

The secret to the mission, though, is to fly it out of order... clear out everything and *then* rendezvous with the Dralthi.

Ahhh, But Halcyon gives you your orders, you must do the mission in the order, prescripted :)

Actually..

No you don't have to do it in order. Afterburned straight to the ralari and made its front red with a full salvo of guns, afterburned away, turned, killed the first grafa(that was at Nav 1 for me) in 1 pass, broke and attacked bossman against the other Grafa while I took out the Ralari. The Ralari is extremely easy no matter what ship you are in. A Hornet could take it out no problem. Just go to full throttle and attack its engines. Afterburn if you need, but I advise against it. You should kill the ralari before bossman takes out the other enemy. Tell Bossman to form on your wing and come to a complete stop, the enemy should stagger very slowly toward you, and be aiming at bossman right next to you, and so you'll have tons of time to shoot it and should take it out in 1 volley.

Now, set your Nav Map to Nav 3. There you should find 4 Krants and a Fralthi. This is the hardest Nav Point besides the attack you go through on the way back to the Claw... More about that later. Anyway, so right away break and attack Bossman, get on the tail of 1 Krant and send a missle up its tailpipes. Nail the other one that attacks you with guns. Then help Bossman out and take out a third Krant with Missles, turn to the Fralthi and attack it while Bossman handles the last Krant. He should kill it before you kill the Fralthi, so you'll have assisstance. Launch all missle except for 2 at the Fralthi's tail and concentrate all attacks there, it shopuld fall easy if every time you go at it you have full engines, and turn around to make another pass you afterburn away. Soon the Fralthi will die, so jump to Nav 2.

At Nav 2 there are 4 unfriendly Dralthi's and 1 guy you must save. 1 attacks you right away, break and attack Bossman and launch a missle at the Dralthi attacking you. Turn and see who attacks the friendly dralthi. Taunt it and launch your last missle at it when you have a good shot. Now the rest of the dralthi's should eaily be taken out with guns. Now head back to Nav 3, because if you go to Nav 1 a huge force is awaiting you and if you go stgraight to the Tigers claw another huge force awaits you. Anyway from Nav 3 DO NOT GO TO THE TIGERS CLAW. On the way back to the Tigers Claw 4 Krants are waiting, 2 of which will go after the captured Dralthi, it never had a chance when I tried, sooo, instead cut towards Nav 1. Yes there is a huge force at Nav 1, thats why you're not really going there. In the middle of Nav 3 and 1 is an asteroid field which you must stop the auto pilot and navigate around. When you get to that asteroid field change your destination to the tigers claw, this way you do not have to deal with the huge force at Nav 1, nor the Krants at Nav 3. You should win using this strat, but it might take a while.

[Note: if you run out of Fuel just give up. You can't navigate around asteroids without fuel (or at least I couldn't) so when you have 1 line left try not to afterburn and kill as quickly as possible]

Ben (hope this helped)

On the issue of flying according to the briefing...

It is within every right of the wingleader to make any necessary commanding decisions, even if the situation warrants altering the flight plan. Flying out of order to make the mission run according to your favor is a decision that would have you commended by any superior officer in the real world, as long as the mission was successful.:)

I always fly acording the mission briefing, and don´t have any problem, nor was in mi imagination to fly in any order.

I have no reason not to follow the mission as it was given to me, excepted when the story told me tohterwise.

Thanks for the help, I will definitely try that (flying out of order). I of course already tried to go back through Nav 1 but quickly decided otherwise... :(
The Ralari and the Gratha (I remember now they weren't Krants indeed) aren't much of a problem, I could already get past that without damage, the real problem was that my flying style requires a lot of afterburner fuel to get past a lot of light, fast ships without damage, so I'd always run out at Nav 3.
I'm wondering, what would happen if from Nav 2 you go straight to the claw, through the asteroid field, avoiding Nav 3 altogether? Sure, it'll cost kills, but is it possible?
I might try that.
Btw, flying a mission out of order because you *know* from experience you'll die otherwise will get you a promotion and a post at Intel as a seer. :D

Halcyon: Fine. Here's the setup. Head to the rendezvous point via Nav 1. Nav 2 is your real destination. Make sure there's no danger for our Dralthi fighter... ...who will meet you there. Escort him home. One thing. Tactical recommends that Nav 1 should be avoided for the trip home. You are to return by way of Nav 3 and use the asteroids for cover. Good luck, Maverick. Squadron dismissed.

These are the orders for the mission -- no one *ever* said anything *anywhere* about not being able to change your course. Going from "I have to patrol four Nav points" to "IT WOULD BE BETRAYING COLONEL HALCYON IF I DO NOT PATROL ALL FOUR NAV POINTS IN ORDER!" is kind of reading in something that isn't there.

Can't navigate asteroids without afterburners?! Heck, afterburning is one of the last things I do in an asteroid field. Oh wait, are things different in SWC?

BTW, I love those 'go back to Nav 1 and bag more kills' missions. There are two that I'm sure of, and I think only one of them is mentioned in the CIC Game Guide.

Heh. Answers...

Unforgiven -- I tried doubling back skipping nav 1 and 3 altogether... Ships were waiting in between Nav Points. An overwhelming amount that is..

Wedge -- Just trust me on this, this mission is frustrating enough to keepo this single Dralthi alive. It took me a while to figure out how to keep Bossman myself AND the Dralthi alive (like doing the mission 20 times). Its quite Hard, so doubling back to Nav 1 would kill at least ONE of your wingmen. Also, in Super Wing Commander when you run out of fuel, your ship goes really slow automatically. I mean to slow you are moving at the speed of the slowest asteroids, it'd take an hour to navigate a small asteroid field, and some asteroids come fast, some slow, so you'd be crushed in between two without a doubt. Also, fuel is automatically subtracted from normal flight, its not extra fuel like in Wing Commander 3 and 4, but the whole ships fuel, you use some every auto, every normal flight and more every afterburn...

You can't skip Nav 3 -- you have to bring the enemy fighter through there. Go to Nav 3 first and clear it out.

The quickest way to get out of an asteroid field IS to use afterburners and keep a straight course, only deviating for the slow moving asteroids that lumber towards you. All the others go by the wayside.

I.M. Weasel: "I.R., why did you hit that wall?"
I.R. Baboon: "It jumping out of nowhere in front of I.R."

If you replace wall with asteroid, this seems to be true when afterburning through an asteroid field in WC1. :D
At least on my system it is.

Errr...

Errr thats not what I meant. I meant to to Nav 1, then 3, then 2, then 3, then 1 (turn left at asterpoids insteada going to Nav 1) then tigers claw. My reasoning: Nav 1 is easy, the DFralthi usually dies at Nav 2 if you leave it untouched, in between Tigers claw and Nav 3 are 4 Krants, 2 of which go for the Dralthi, if you head back to Nav 1, stop at the asteroid field and return to the Tigers Claw instead of actually going all the way to Nav 1, you sidestep these Krants completely...
