Rise to Honor Guide

Sharpshooter

Rear Admiral
Rise to Honor

Remember : when playing the game, skip any cutscenes taking place in Halcyon's office or the game may crash. Destroying Spirit's ship also seems to make the game crash at times, which may make the Bronze Star in McAuliffe 3/Gateway 3 and the Medal of Valor in Hell's Kitchen 4 very difficult (if not impossible) to get. You might be better off letting her go. Note that as far as I know, it is Spirit's "dying" line that makes the game crash, so if you manage to destroy her ship while she's saying "Bye, kitty. I'm outta here!", the game won't crash.

This guide describes Enyo, McAuliffe, Gimle, Dakota, Kurasawa, Venice (winning paths), Brimstone, Rostov (middle paths), Gateway, Chengdu, Port Hedland, Hubble's Star, and Hell's Kitchen (losing paths) in this order.

One more thing - Confed aces don't really die in Rise to Honor. So don't be surprised if you encounter them in more than one mission even after you've destroyed their ships.

*Winning paths*

Enyo

Ship : Salthi.
Wingman : Starkiller (Bhurak?).

Enyo 1

Nav 1 has 3 Scimitars, but two of them tend to crash into each other so you may have to fight only one or two of them. Nav 2 has an asteroid field. Near Nav 3 are 2 Hornets. There's another asteroid field between Nav 3 and the Snakeir.

This mission is fairly easy. I recommend saving your DF for one of the Hornets since killing them with a Salthi can take a while.

Enyo 2

Nav 1 has 2 Hornets. Nav 2 is where the Lumbari jumps out. It has 3 Scimitars. There's an asteroid field on the way back.

This mission is significantly harder than the Confed version. The Hornets are hard to hit, and the Scimitars really have to be destroyed as soon as possible. You can use your DF against one of the Hornets since they're hard to hit, or you could save it for one of the Scimitars since they do more damage. No matter what happens, do not let the enemies lure you too far away from the transport - this is especially true for the Scimitars.

McAuliffe

Ship : Dralthi.
Wingman : Stalker.

McAuliffe 1

Nav 1 has 3 Scimitars. Nav 2 is empty. Nav 3 has a mine field. Nav 4 has 3 hornets.

This mission is easy. I personally like saving my HS missiles for the Hornets.

McAuliffe 2

Between the Snakeir and Nav 1 are 4 Scimitars. Nav 1 has 2 Scimitars and a Venture.

This mission is a cakewalk. Scimitars are very easy to destroy. You may want to save some missiles for the Venture so you can destroy it more quickly, but it doesn't really matter.

McAuliffe 3

Nav 1 has 4 Scimitars, the Lumbari jumps in after a short while. On the way back you run into 3 Hornets, including Spirit.

This mission is much easier than the original version. The Scimitars are easy. The Hornets may be troublesome, I recommend taking out the 2 Hornets as soon as possible. Then attack Spirit. She's tough, but in a Dralthi she shouldn't be that hard. You can try ramming her ship if you have too much trouble hitting her.

Gimle

Ships : Gratha in missions 1 and 3, Hhriss in mission 2.
Wingman : Fireclaw.

Gimle 1

The Snakeir is under attack by 2 Hornets. After destroying them 2 more Hornets show up. Then when you autopilot to the Fralthi you find it under attack by 3 Rapiers.

The Hornets are easy, although it may take a while to destroy them due to the Gratha's poor manoeuvrability. Saving the Fralthi is very difficult. The strategy is mostly the same as in the original Kurasawa 2 mission - destroy and distract the Rapiers (especially those closest to the Fralthi) as quickly as possible. The missiles will really help, as a Rapier will often waste time trying to dodge a missile while you're busy taking care of another Rapier. Even if they don't bother dodging they'll lose their target when they get hit. You may wish to ram at least one Rapier. Telling Fireclaw to attack as soon as you can may be helpful as well. He should be able to distract one of the Rapiers.

Gimle 2

Nav 1 has asteroids. Nav 2 has 4 Scimitars. Nav 3 has 2 Raptors.

This mission is ridiculously easy. Have fun flying one of the best WC ships ever.

Gimle 3

Nav 1 has 5 Scimitars. After taking them out 4 more Scimitars attack, including Knight.

Scimitars still suck. Even Knight.

Dakota

Ship : Gratha.
Wingman : Stalker. Note that Stalker's behavior and comm messages are different from the first time you flew with him.

Dakota 1

On your way to Nav 1, 5 Hornets attack the Lumbari. At Nav 1, 3 Scimitars attack while the Lumbari is preparing for the jump. The second Lumbari jumps in shortly after you arrive at Nav 2, but 3 Rapiers are waiting for you...

This mission is in my humble opinion much harder than the original version. The Hornets have to be destroyed very quickly. Unfortunately, they're hard to hit. Basically tell Stalker to attack as soon as possible, he should be able to distract one of the Hornets. Be sure not to miss too often or you'll have to wait for your guns to recharge, which is something you can't afford. You'll probably want to use most of your missiles against the Hornets as well. No matter what you do, be sure to stay close to the Lumbari and don't turn away from it too often since it can destroyed very quickly. When you reach Nav 1 you have to destroy the Scimitars quickly, but it shouldn't be too hard since they're fairly easy to hit. When you reach Nav 2, do your best to destroy two of the Rapiers (at least) before the Lumbari jumps in. You can try taking one out on the first pass, but be sure to dodge their hits. Use any missiles you have left. When the Lumbari appears, any remaining Rapiers will start attacking it. The good news is that Rapiers are easier to hit when they're attacking a ship other than yours. The bad news is that if there's more than one Rapier left, the Lumbari won't last long.

Dakota 2

Nav 1 has asteroids and 2 Raptors. Nav 2 has 4 Scimitars. 2 more Scimitars and 1 Venture appear after you destroy them. Nav 3 has another asteroid field.

Fairly easy. Just be careful not to crash into one of the asteroids at Nav 1 and you should be fine.

Dakota 3

Nav 1 has 5 Scimitars and a Diligent, but two of the Scimitars may crash into each other. Nav 2 has 2 Rapiers and 1 Diligent. Iceman is in one of the Rapiers. Then when you take the two Rapiers out two more Rapiers and on more diligent show up.

The Rapiers aren't actually that bad except for Iceman, who's quite tough. Take out the other Rapier first, then tell Stalker to stop attacking and take care of Iceman yourself. The best way to do damage to his ship seems to be to let him charge you head on, then you can hit him easily. However, you do have dodge most of his hits, or you'll be taking heavy damage.

Kurasawa

Ship : Hhriss.
Wingman : The Fang (Khajja?).

Kurasawa 1

Nav 1 has 6 Scimitars and a Diligent. Another Diligent jumps in at Nav 2, guarded by 3 more Scimitars. Yet another Diligent jumps in at Nav 3, guarded by 2 Rapiers.

Kurasawa's really fun... You get to fly the best ship in the game with one of the best wingmen in the game. Have fun blasting everything to pieces with your shiny Hhriss.

Kurasawa 2

The asteroid field has 4 Hornets. The Venture nav has 4 Raptors.

The Hornets shouldn't be too hard in a Hhriss. When you get to the Venture Nav, tell The Fang to attack as soon as possible. While you still have to destroy the Raptors quickly so they don't destroy the Venture, this mission should be much easier than the original Kurasawa 2.

Kurasawa 3

The Fralthi nav has 5 Scimitars. Nav 2 has 4 Scimitars.

You just have to protect the Fralthi and destroy the Scimitars as soon as possible. It shouldn't be that hard.

Venice

Ship : Hhriss
Wingman : Deathstroke (Dakhath?)

Venice 1

The Fralthi Nav is clear. Nav 2 has a minefield and 2 Rapiers. Nav 3 has asteroids. Nav 4 has Scimitars, including Maniac, and 1 Venture. When you destroy the Scimitars 4 Raptors attack.

Fighting Rapiers in a minefield can be a bit dangerous, you may want to use your missiles there. Fortunately, the Hhriss' shields are so tough that it shouldn't be too hard. The Scimitars and Raptors are easy (as always), but do remember to dodge their hits (especially the Raptors'). The Hhriss is tough, but not invulnerable.

Venice 2

Nav 1 has asteroids and 2 Raptors. After destroying them 2 more Raptors appear. Nav 2 has 4 Hornets and an Exeter. Four Scimitars attack you after the Hornets are destroyed.

Two more Hhriss help you out in this mission, and none of the enemies are really difficult, so this mission is very easy. Just be careful not to get accidentally hit by your own wingmen.

Venice 3

Nav 1 has mines. Nav 2 has mines and 2 Rapiers. Nav 3 has 2 Scimitars (Kinight is in one of them) and a Venture. At the Rendezvous Nav 4 Raptors attack the Snakeir.

Take out the Raptors as quickly as you can, as their guns will do a lot of damage to the Snakeir.

Venice 4

There's a minefield before Nav 1. Nav 1 has 4 Scimitars and an Exeter. Nav 2 has 4 Raptors and the Star Post. After the Raptors are destroyed 4 Hornets show up, then after you destroy them 4 Rapiers attack you.

The Scimitars are very easy, the Raptors are easy as long as you remember to dodge their hits, the Hornets are easy but may take a while to destroy, and the Rapiers are the hardest part of the mission, so you may want to save your missiles and most of your AB fuel for them. Try to take one out quickly (destroy it on the first pass, and/or use afterburner slide). Also remember to help Deathstroke against the Raptors and Rapiers since he'll probably have trouble against them. Unless you send your wingman home at the start of the mission, Venice 4 should be fairly easy.

*Middle paths*

Brimstone

Ship : Dralthi.
Wingman : Bloodmist.

Brimstone 1

Nav 1 has 1 Hornet. After you destroy it you get attacked by 3 Raptors. Nav 2 has 2 Scimitars and asteroids. Nav 3 is clear.

None of the enemies are hard, but Bloodmist is a nutcase (he replaces Maniac from the original game).

Brimstone 2

On your way to Nav 1 you find 4 Hornets and an asteroid field. Nav 1 has 3 Scimitars.

The Hornets are annoying, so use your missiles against them.

Brimstone 3

Before Nav 1 are 2 Rapiers. Nav 1 has 4 Scimitars (Maniac is in one of them) and 1 Diligent. After you defeat the Scimitars 2 more Scimitars appear.

The Rapiers shouldn't be that hard thanks to the Dralthi's speed and manoeuvrability, and you can use your missiles against them.

Rostov

Ship : Gratha.
Wingman : Redclaw (Bakhtosh?).

Rostov 1

Your carrier is surrounded by asteroids. Nav 1 has more asteroids. Nav 2 has yet more asteroids and 2 Scimitars, including Knight. A Diligent jumps in a while after you arrive at Nav 3, which is guarded by 2 Raptors, and then 4 more Raptors attack you after you beat the forementioned 2 Raptors. Nav 4 has, guess what, asteroids.

Assuming you don't dislike asteroids too much, this mission should be pretty easy. Just be sure to dodge the Raptors' hits to the best of your ability when you fight them.

Rostov 2

On the way to Nav 1 are asteroids and 2 Hornets. 3 more Hornets appear after you destroy the first two. Nav 1 has 4 Rapiers and a Venture. On the way home are more asteroids.

The Hornets are annoying, but you'll probably want to save your missiles for the Rapiers, which are quite difficult. You're probably going to use a lot of AB fuel against the Rapiers due to the Gratha's poor manoeuvrability. As always, try to take out one of the Rapiers as soon as possible. When there are only one or two Rapiers left, you can let a Rapier charge you head on so you can gun it down (but once again, dodging most of their hits should be your priority).

Rostov 3

Your carrier is once again surrounded by asteroids. Nav 1 has asteroids. Near Nav 2 you find 4 Scimitars, including Maniac, and an Exeter jumps in. On the way back are 4 Scimitars and more asteroids.

Seeing as you only fight Scimitars in this mission, it should be fairly easy. Just watch out for all those asteroids.

*Losing paths*

Gateway

Ship : Salthi.
Wingman : Stalker.

Gateway 1

Nav 1 has asteroids. Nav 2 has 4 Hornets. Nav 3 has 2 Raptors.

I recommend using your DF against one of the Hornets, since they're so hard to hit. The Raptors will take quite a few hits to destroy, but they're no match for your super-manoeuvrable Salthi.

Gateway 2

Your carrier is under attack by 4 Scimitars, then 4 more Scimitars. Destroy them quickly (easily done).

Gateway 3

The Lumbari jumps in at Nav 1, which is guarded by two Raptors. On the way back 2 Hornets attack the Lumbari, including Spirit.

This mission is significantly harder than McAuliffe 3. The Raptors aren't much of a problem and you should be able to destroy them quickly. The Hornets, however, can destroy the Lumbari pretty quickly. They're hard to destroy due to the fact that they're good at dodging your hits, and your lasers don't do that much damage. I recommend quickly destroying the Hornet with a DF and a few hits. Then attack Spirit. She's very tough, and you might have to ram her ship if you're going to save the Lumbari.

Chengdu

Ship : Salthi.
Wingman : Fireclaw.

Chengdu 1

The Salthi Nav has 4 Scimitars. If you manage to destroy them all before the Salthi reaches the Snakeir (it should be much easier than quickly destroying the 4 Krants in the Confed version), 2 more Scimitars and a Venture appear. I might be a good idea not to go after after the Venture too quickly (you can start heading toward it at normal speed, but I recommend waiting until the Salthi is no longer on your radar before really attacking, since the Salthi might die if you are too far away from ir before it reaches the Snakeir). In order to truly win this mission, you must both save the Salthi and destroy the Venture. Destroy the 2 Scimitars before you attack the Venture.

Chengdu 2

On the way to Nav 1 is an asteroid field. At Nav 1 are 3 Scimitars, including Knight. The Fralthi jumps out. On the way back are 4 Hornets in an asteroid field.

Do not afterburn through the asteroid field, since the Fralthi will die if you get too far away from it. When you reach Nav 1 you must destroy the Scimitars as quickly as possible. Fortunately, the Fralthi's pretty tough, and Fireclaw should be able to distract (and possibly destroy) one of the Scimitars. I personally recommend destroying the 2 Scimitars first, then Knight's ship. Use your DF if you feel you have to. The fight against the 4 Hornets is probably one of the hardest dogfights in the game. Destroy them as quickly as you can, use your DF if you still have it, and try to lure them out of the asteroid field if possible. Go evasive immediately if you're hit from behind. If you find this fight to be too difficult, you can just ignore the Hornets and afterburner home.

Chengdu 3

The Snakeir is under attack by 2 Raptors, then 4 more Raptors. You need to be quick here. Fortunately the Raptors are easy to hit. I recommend saving your DF for the second wave.

Port Hedland

Ship : Dralthi.
Wingman : Stalker.

Port Hedland 1

The Lumbari jumps in at Nav 1, which is guarded by 2 Rapiers. On the way back are 3 Raptors.

No special tricks here, you just need to be quick. I recommend using your HS missiles against the Rapiers.

Port Hedland 2

Nav 1 has 3 Scimitars. Nav 2 has mines. Nav 3 has 4 Raptors and 1 Exeter. Nav 4 has asteroids.

You'll be fine as long as you dodge the Raptors' hits.

Port Hedland 3

The Snakeir is attacked by 2 Rapiers, including Iceman. The Fralthi Nav has 2 Raptors. Nav 2 has Scimitars and an Exeter that will jump out if not taken out quickly.

When defending the Snakeir, take care of Iceman last since he's the hardest to hit (although he shouldn't be that hard since he's busy attacking your carrier). Saving the Fralthi shouldn't be too hard. You should have some missiles left, so you can use them. When you reach Nav 2, destroy the Exeter first to make sure it doesn't jump out. Of course you'll have to make several passes since the Scimitars will be attacking you. If you have any missiles left, you can use them on the Exeter to destroy it more quickly. Destroying the Scimitars afterwards should be easy assuming you didn't crash into the Exeter. Overall this mission is much easier than the Confed version.

Hubble's Star

Ship : Dralthi.
Wingman : None.

Hubble's Star 1

Nav 1 has 3 Scimitars and a Venture. Nav 2 has 3 Scimitars, including Knight, and 2 Diligents.

Despite the fact that you don't have a wingman, this mission should be easy (you're only facing Scimitars and capships).

Hubble's Star 2

On the way to Nav 1 is a minefield and 4 Scimitars. At Nav 1, 2 Raptors are attacking the two transports.

This mission, despite being hard, is *much* easier than the Confed version. You can fight the Scimitars, although you don't have to. While they're fairly easy, you need to watch out for the mines. When you reach Nav 1, you basically have to distract and destroy the Raptors very quickly. Use your missiles, fly around them, attack the Raptor that's currently closest to the transports, and so on.

Hubble's Star 3

Nav 1 has asteroids and 3 Scimitars. When you get back to the Snakeir you find it under attack by 2 Raptors then 2 Rapiers. Iceman is in one of the Rapiers.

The Scimitars are fairly easy. Just be careful not to crash into an asteroid. The Raptors must, as usual, be destroyed as soon as possible. Good thing they're easy to hit. When the Rapiers appear, destroy the "regular" Rapier first, then attack Iceman. HS missiles may be especially helpful against the first Rapier.

Hell's Kitchen

Ship : Dralthi.
Wingman : Deathstroke (Dakhath?).

Hell's Kitchen 1

Between the Snakeir and Nav 1 are 4 Hornets. The Lumbari jumps in at Nav 1, which has 3 Scimitars, then 3 more Scimitars. Maniac is leading the second wing. On the way back are 3 Raptors.

I recommend using your HS missiles against the Hornets. You can't save the Lumbari no matter how hard you try, so just destroy everything.

Hell's Kitchen 2

On the way to Nav 1 is a minefield with 3 Hornets led by Spirit. An Exeter jumps in at Nav 1. It is guarded by 4 Raptors then 2 Raptors.

This mission is a bit difficult. You can skip the fight with Spirit if you wish (the Hornets aren't that bad, but the mines can be annoying). Dodge as many of the Raptors' hits as you can, and destroy them as quickly as possible. Save a bit of fuel for the trip home so you can afterburn past the minefield.

Hell's Kitchen 3

On the way to Nav 1 are mines and 5 Hornets. At Nav 1 4 Scimitars are attacking the Fralthi. Knight is in one of the Scimitars. After you defeat them 4 Raptors attack.

The Hornets are tough. If you choose to fight them, you may want to use some missiles against them, but try to save some for Nav 1. Nav 1 is no different from most defence missions, just defeat the attacking enemies as quickly as possible. Missiles may help against the Raptors, since you've got to be fast. Regarding the Scimitar wave, I tend to destroy Kinght's ship last since he's the hardest to beat (though not by much).

Hell's Kitchen 4

Nav 1 has 2 Raptors and 1 Venture, then on your way to the rendezvous nav you'll fight :

-Spirit leading a wing of 4 Hornets, near an asteroid field;
-Knight leading a wing of 5 Scimitars, near a minefield;
-Iceman leading a wing of 3 Rapiers, also near a minefield.

Then when you get to the Snakeir, you'll find it under attack by Maniac leading a wing of 4 Scimitars.

This mission is hard but not that hard. Nav 1 is easy, just try not to get your ship damaged. When fighting the Hornet wing, try not to be lured into the asteroid field. You may want to use some missiles against them. The Scimitar wing is easy so long as you don't get tricked into fighting in the minefield. If you do end up fighting in it, you should proabably get out of it as soon as you can. Iceman and his Rapiers are the real challenge. One trick here is to slow down when you first see them and tell Deathstroke to attack them (if he's no longer with you, I recommend restarting the mission and protecting him better next time). Then he'll hopefully be their primary target, and you can shoot them while they're busy attacking him. HS missiles may help if you have any left. If you end up in a minefield, get out of it quick or you probably won't last long. Dodge the Rapiers' hits and missiles at all costs. When the first two Rapiers are down, tell Deathstroke to stop attacking (if he's still here), and take care of Iceman. He'll probably try to attack head on. Do not let him hit you, you can't afford it (you could let him charge you in a Gratha, but since you're flying a Dralthi, it's not recommended at all). Dodge his hits and keep hitting him when he's near you and eventually you should be able to defeat him. When you get to the Snakeir, just destroy all of the Scimitars (hopefully you have some AB fuel left to make it quicker). Then land.

NOTE : Partly due to the Spirit bug, I haven't managed to win the Medal of Valor in Hell's Kitchen 4 yet. I don't know if it's possible. Last time I played I destroyed 18 of the enemies. If I manage to destroy all of the 19 enemies, I'll let you know what happens.

SPIRIT

Spirit is not a wingman, but she's included here due to the fact that she's different from the other Confed aces (who just use SM2 Drakhai comm messages). Like Stalker, her dying line has a lot more "o"s than I wrote here.

It's another one of the fan mods Sharpshooter has been posting a lot about - it's available here: https://www.wcnews.com/missions/

It's not a total conversion like Standoff or anything... it's just a very early set of edited missions for Wing Commander I.

On a different note, these threads have got HCl thinking about finishing up some of his WC1 editing tools again that he's had in various stages of development for a while. I guess he wasn't sure anyone was interested.

That would be awesome - it would be especially neat to be able to edit the briefings, debriefings, and bar conversations.

I would like very much to make a 'Wing Commander movie' mod for Wing Commander I - use (most of) the same talking heads and ships and use the dialog and mission layouts from the film.

Frankly, I think the idea of being able to spend some more time on the 'Claw while flying against bat-wing Dralthis would be awesome in and of itself! I can't speak for everyone - but I'm willing to bet there would be interest in additional missions utilizing WC1's layout.

I have always wanted to explore the early and middle of the war range further.. WCIII is great and all, but its hard to expand since it ended the war. There is plenty of early war to explore though and also there is that 10 year gap between WCI and II
