Ranks in WC1

I still don't see why everyone was so down on the scimitar. It was a good ship, when you used it for what it was designed for.

Evne in WC1, when they were "outdated", they were good for recon (and limited recon-in-force), and as interceptors. Pretty damned effective against a Ralari, too, as I recall.

It was designed as a gun-heavy slug. I wouldn't use it for Recon if my life depended on it - the Hornet was faster, as was the Raptor. The Raptor was not only faster, but had heavier shields, armor, and guns, so would be better for recon in force OR interceptor duty. About the only nice thing about it was that it would take the hits that'd take down a Hornet, and then let you go in after the Ralari with guns somewhat more effective than a pair of lasers.

But nothing beat the Raptor or Rapier for serious ass-whooping in those games.

I'd take the Hornet over the Scim any day. I really suck in the Scim (WC1 version).
You remember that mission in I think SM1 where you are supposed to scout an enemy force, but are NOT allowed to attack. I easily eradicated them in the Hornet. Stupid game had penalized my for hit however... <g>

I think the Hornet is (slightly) worse than the Scimitar because it's easily destroyed and not as nimble as the Rapier. I could probably breach its shields and hull with a pistol.

Of course the Raptor and Rapier are "better". They're newer and more powerful. But, the Scimitar had its usefulness. I'm more powerful than most of you people, but I don't hate you all for it ;)

(Take that as the joke that it was. Don't gripe and grumble, as I've been informed happens so much about me)

The Scim was too slow for recon, as it could barely outrun a GRATHA on a good day. And the Gratha had more guns AND armor.

No, the Scim was good for a few missions (as long as the target didn't move much and didn't have too much guns) - namely going against Dorkir, or the odd Ralari. I wouldn't trust that around a Fralthi any farther than I could spit at one... through a spacesuit, no less.

The HORNET at least let me run away from most people who had me outgunned. In the Scim, all I cou ld do was pray that they missed while I juked like a madman and watched the armor take the hits that didn't.

The thing about the Scimitar was that it was like a Rolex (in wc1, at least). It'd take a lickin and keep on tickin. The ticking probably came from a 10 year old ding in the frame somewhere that was rattling from engine vibration. (Yes, I know, that was stupid. Shut up).

Seriously, though, the scimitar that I got assigned to would take more abuse than I thougt it should have been able to. Not that that happened very often. . . I was usually too damned good for the cats to get too close to me. Those damned minefields got me more than anything. . .

You know, that's why you need a Hornet or a Raptor - the Raptor could survive one or two mines, while the Hornet would let you dance around most of them at speed. The Scim's armor, while impressive, wasn't as tough as it was made out to be.

What it DID have was two very solid mass-drivers. Those easily beat the spitball lasers on the Hornet, and its missile load was a godsend in comparison to the earlier craft's.

Now if only it could've DODGED, it'd have been really impressive. I'm with Iceman on his opinion of the Scim.
