Ranks in WC1

Well, I made Lt. Colonel in the Sega CD version. Also things that factor in is wingman death. The first time I ever playec wing commander, I must have gotten every pilot on the tigers claw killed.. they were dropping like flies, and I had to fly that farking medium fighter (you know, the one made out of carboard) for most all the missions, even though I usually was winning them.

Generally, losing your wingmen keeps you on the middle path, IIRC. It's not 'good' to lose them - it means you're using them too heavily as shields, and thus not a skilled pilot. :D

IIRC, it's physically impossible to become a Lt. Col. in WC1 -- the game doesn't allow you to go higher than Major, no matter how many promotion points you earn.

Yeah, it wouldn't make much sense to be Space Marshall and still be flying Rapiers on leg patrols.

Wingman death isn't really a factor.. Each mission has multiple objectives which are equal to a certain number of "winning points." A complex calculation of winning points may win you some missions, but lose you overall systems. This is a lot like the Hawk/Panther morale calculation that determines the ending of WC4.

One question about WC I

When you complete the Drayman Escort mission (Mission #2 in the game) do you get a Bronze Star normaly, or do you have to do really well?

I got a Bronze Star in that Mission, but after the Drayman jumped, I went back to the Claw via Nav 1 and then ran into a few more Salthi and destroyed them. Was this cruitcal?

That's not necessary, actually. Like Chris said, mission victories, medals, and promotions are each awarded based on point systems. For medals, points are awarded based on which types of ships you kill (or save) during the course of a mission.

  • Salthi - 7 points
  • Dralthi - 10 points
  • Krant - 10 points
  • Gratha - 15 points
  • Jalthi - 15 points
  • Hhriss - 15 points
  • Dorkir - 15 points
  • Ralari - 25 points
  • Fralthi - 50 points
  • Snakeir - 70 points
  • Star Post - 75 points

In addition, you lose one point for the destruction of a Confederation ship (including those captured by the Kilrathi, oddly) and earn 25 points for saving a friendly ship.

Some missions have a set number of points you must meet or exceed in order to earn a medal for that mission. Other missions don't offer medals at all. The mission in question, Enyo 2, requires you to earn 52 points for a Bronze Star. As long as you save the Drayman, you should only need to kill two Dralthi and a Salthi to get it.

I remember Maniac getting killed in the first one (because he is a fool who does not listen), but pretty much everyone else survived! (Imagine my surprise when Maniac appeared in the future WC games!!)
Also, I have never played the secret missions for any WC game, can anyone tell me where I might find a working version of them?

I remember Maniac getting Grounded for inadvertly destroying a Drayman with a Heat Seeker, when the Kilrathi fighter it was tracking did a sharp turn

That was the "Official Guide to WC1 and WC2" by someone whose name I can't remember. In the SM games, Maniac was never grounded... kept flying even as he went loco.

Apparently he was grounded for a little while for trashing the 'sport:
Maniac at Rostov 2 - "Hey there, Maverick. How’s it goin’? I sure wish that I could see some more action. But the Commander won’t let me on the flight deck. He’s still upset about that ’sport that I accidentally scragged. Man, it wasn’t my fault, I can’t control a missile once it’s launched! No one can! How am I supposed to stop it from acquiring a Drayman as its target? Besides, a transport should know enough to stay out of a fighter’s way."
But he was later reinstated to the flight roster and went completely looney going after the Sivar Dreadnaught. At the beginning of the Firekkan Sivar ceremony he was again removed from the flight roster, but later reinstated when the Tigers Claw needed all of her pilots to fend off the Kilrathi fleet.

Ah, they coulda gotten through the entire ordeal with Chris Blair and Lance Casey . . . well . . . if Casey hadn't been at his mother's teat at the time. According to how people praise them, Blair and Casey could have singlehandedly flown all the way to kilrah and taken down the entire fleet. Nothing like when an entire air group scrambles their butts like mad to intercept inbound bombers with escort, and then, upon getting back, seeing one puny little junior lieutenant get credited with the whole thing. Are you talking about the Scimitar? *tries to block bad memories of flying the Scimitar*

I still don't see why everyone was so down on the scimitar. It was a good ship, when you used it for what it was designed for.

Evne in WC1, when they were "outdated", they were good for recon (and limited recon-in-force), and as interceptors. Pretty damned effective against a Ralari, too, as I recall.

yeah, I dont recall the name of it, but its the one you get to fly directly after the Hornet. I really wish I could go back and play WC1 and 2 to relove old times, but alas I have no kilrathi saga version :(

Its the one that turns like a boat, has the shields of a light fighter, and is very, very slow. I would have rather flown a hornet.
