Vice Admiral
How do you get to the following ranks in WC1

1st L
2nd L (oops)
Captian
Major
Lt. Colonel

I remember getting to LTC in WC1 (Not in expansions) but I can't seem to do it now. How do you do it?

You have to stay on the Winning path.

Enyo Start: 2nd Lt
Enyo End: 1st Lt

McAuliffe Start: 1st Lt
McAuliffe End: Captain

Gimle Start: Captain
Gimle End: Captain

Dakota Start: Captain
Dakota End: Major

Kurosawa Start: Major
Kurosawa End: Major

Venice Start: Major
Venice End: Kill the Starbase, get Medal of Valor. Stay as Major

The next promotion doesn't come till you're into the Secret Missions, in Bifrost, and only if you complete both missions successfully. I think you could make Lt. Colonel in the SNES version, but I'd have to doublecheck.

Promotions don't happen at pre-set points in WC1. Just do well, score a bunch of kills and win a bunch of missions and you can make up to Major in the first game.

Even as young as I was when I played the SNES WC, I remember thinking "Dang . . . this pilot guy sure has climbed the ladder pretty quickly . . . in what . . a couple of weeks, is it? I thought it took most people several years, even decades to become a Major."

I once made it to Lt. Col in the first game... I killed every enemy without letting my wingmans kill any (or not no more than 1) nor letting any enemy escape and won every mission. I saved and replayed every mission until I could achieve this.

I suppose you gain promotions with the amount of enemies you kill.

My WC skills are not what they used to be though, and I am not nearly good enough to do this anymore :(

Promotions are different during war time

What am I saying? Did Blair ever become a Lt. Colonel? He got Major, became demoted, and then became a Colonel.

Memory lapse...

Secret Missions 1 gave you the chance - any of the addons would let you go up to Lt. Colonel. After all, at the end of SM2, Halcyon wants to promote you to head up the Tiger's Claw fighter wing since he was being transferred to Tactical Command in a few weeks.

Then the K'Tithrak Mang incident happened...

IIRC, it's physically impossible to become a Lt. Col. in WC1 -- the game doesn't allow you to go higher than Major, no matter how many promotion points you earn.

Does SM1 count as part of the original game, given that the interface for WC lets you 'Play Secret Missions' if you've got those installed?

Can you not ? Is it not doable by design or is it just that anyone never reported getting that promotion playing it ?

I might be wrong and not recalling correctly (would that be IIDNRC in internet "slang" ?), as after all I am getting old and my memory fumbles, but I am pretty sure I've made it to Lt Col playing the Vega campaing.

Yes, it's impossible to be a Lt Colonel in WC1. That's a new "Feature" in the Secret Missions.

Eh, no matter if you were promoted to Blair Almighty, you were writing manpower reports as soon as Geoffrey got his hands on you.

True. Colonel Paul Tibbets was 29 when he dropped the Little Boy on Hiroshima.

James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson (RAF's and Aliied top scoring Ace of WWII) made Group Captain (equal to Colonel) in 1945 (when is was 30). He was promoted once every year in the war.

Trying Popsicles Idea;

Current Status: Kurasawa System(pre mission 1), 11 sorties flow, 83 kills (max so far) . 3 BS, 3 SS, 2 GS

Need 164 kills (Every enemy in game)

Kurasawa 2 is going to be a bitch...

Well, I made Lt. Colonel in the Sega CD version. Also things that factor in is wingman death. The first time I ever playec wing commander, I must have gotten every pilot on the tigers claw killed.. they were dropping like flies, and I had to fly that farking medium fighter (you know, the one made out of carboard) for most all the missions, even though I usually was winning them.
