Question regarding fighters

I'm pretty sure this topic has been discussed several times over the years, so if you find this question to be dumb or redundant please ignore:

Just wondering what the general opinion is regarding the fighters of WC1 and WC2 in comparison with the ships of the WC4 era. When studying the readouts it appears that in regards to shields and armor, there is a huge gap and that the older fighters would be severely outmatched. This seems to be an issue in some of the novelizations where Ferrets and Rapiers are going up against Hellcats or worse.

For example, the older fighters will have as little as a single digit thickness in centimeters for shields and armor, while newer ones all average three digits.

Being fond of some of the WC1 era fighters, I was just wondering if anyone has discussed a theory of these earlier ships either being updated in order to have a chance against the newer fighters or the idea that maybe they have some sort of different shielding that only required them to be certain cm "equivalent."

Hope this makes sense... Thanks in advance:D

Because the Chassis is the same, dosn't mean you can't build newer Technology into it, and you have an updated fighter.

It seem's that new fighters were built instead of upgrading old fighters.
I don't know the reason, but I wish there was a "new" Raptor, instead of all these shiny new Bearcats and Thunderbolts.

Just as during WWII there were various kinds of fighters spread around the different fronts....in the kilrathi war the front in huge and it is to be expected since WC is the pacific war in space that multiple kinds of fighters would be present...just because we don't see at a certain time doesn't mean it can't be fighting somewhere else...

The accepted explaination is that new armor/shield technology became available, allowing newer ships to have heavier armor and shields for the same mass. This is why an Arrow can have twenty times as much armor as a Hornet, and ten times as much as an Epee. If the type of armor plates and shield generators used in WC3 were bolted onto an Epee, it would have around half the shield and armor protection of the Arrow.

You just have to have a look at Privateer - Righteous Fire. Compared to regular Privateer you get much more hull value for the same ship due to the new armor alloy that is suddenly available. Military ships will have a similar upgrade (and much sooner then civilian ones).

Right. Using Isometal armor instead of Tungsten armor effectively doubles your armor protection (since it is three times as strong). An Epee with Plasteel armor like in WC2 is flimsy, but with Isometal armor like WC3 ships it would be only a little less-armored than the Arrow.

BTW: does anybody here feel that the Kilrathi were slightly lagging in armor technology in WC3? In previous games, the Kilrathi ships always had a slight edge in armor thickness while the humans had a slight edge in shields and weapons, but in WC3 the human ships had the better armor--and better speed as well. Perhaps the Kilrathi were still using Tungsten armor while the Confederation had switched to Isometal, and were piling on a little extra thickness to compensate, thus slowing them down a little?

I don't think we have to think that the Kilrathi and Confed fighters were literally using the same tungsten and isometal upgrades that the Privateers bought in 2669. Presumably there are lots of armor advancements, composites of different materials and other technologies constantly being unveiled, and ships would all be constantly improving in this area as new things came online.
