Question about the universe map...

Hi, I took a look at the universe map, (the new one, not the one with Prophecy Gold), and I'm a little confused...

I haven't read any of the books and I only beat wing commander 2, 3, 4 and Secret Ops (albeit a while ago) so I don't know what Scylla Jump Lines are nor do I know what a Charybdis is... "Charybdis Capable System"... capable of what?

And what about Pulsa Jump Lines? Are those the jump points like the one Chris Blair used in the movie near the beginning?

The corridor that they used in the movie is a segment of space from Vega into Sol Sectors. The Confed Handbook diagrams exactly which systems are affected.

Scylla jump lines are jump lines that connect to / are affected by the Scylla black hole (By analogy, in Enigma sector we would get Enigma jump lines, affected by the huge black hole in Enigma sector.).

Charybdis refers to the Charybdis pulsar/quasar (the movie calls it a quasar, but in real life, quasars are found only in distant galaxies--they pour out as much energy as whole galaxies).

A point of interest in the movie is that jump points seem to be multi-branched (you can enter one jump point and exit at any of several other jump points), whereas in the game they seem to be single paths (a jump point connects to only ONE other jump point).

I believe that Academy and/or one of the novels specifies that it's possible for a jump point's terminus to shift over time.

Yeah, Fleet Action. The phenomenon isn't really explained in detail, but basically Thrakhath finds that a well-known jump point simply isn't there any more. The delay this caused was one of the reasons why the Tarawa got away. Interestingly, the Confed Handbook also implies that all jump points eventually break down, as a consequence of their use.

Sure makes travelling by jumps feel safe, doesn't it? Of course, they'd just say that the odds of being closed inside a jump transit is extremely low.

BTW, I don't recall any reference to jump points in Academy.

I'm referring to the television show. I think that they talked a little about jump points in Expendable.

Part of the unique qualities of the corridor in the movie do include some weird jump-line stuff. It's not normal, and has to do with all the anomalies we see in the movie.

Er, that would be End Run, not Fleet Action. Thrakhath kills his navigator when that happens, iirc (not that it was the navigator's fault). The Kilrathi also have some limited cloaking technology to hide jump points that they demonstrate in WC3. However, the technology is apparently dependent on the nearby nebula, and unusable in most situations. IIRC, Eisen believes that the jump point is still present, but isn't certain if its been cloaked or actually temporarily closed. This leads me to suspect that there are certain elements of the jump process that require the jumping ship to have a definite sensor lock on the jump point before a jump can take place (otherwise, why not just dive the Victory into the location of the jump point, which should be known, and see if the jump actually takes place?).

actually in HOTT the novel, they say that they could just run to the spot where the jump point was and jump it. They didn't do it because at the time they thought it had been shut down.
