Promotions in the WC Universe

Ehm... You probably got it for completing the system's winning path... despite failing that last mission...

...or your memory is playing with you, my friend... ;)

That may well be, for my memory failed me a lot of times before...
Isn't it so that you get "promotion points" for each destroyed ship? I think I played that mission as a Major (I did not own SM1 at that time) and immediately got promoted to LT.Col. after icing those 3 Fralthis and their escorts.
But as we said, my memory might be fooling me, again...

Hi, Mekt!

Suggestion: You got the medal and promotion for scoring
X number of points in the mission. But you also
engaged the Fralthi, which you were NOT supposed to do,
so you got the "Halcyon chewing out sequence". The two
are probably divorced from each other. And the mission
was probably a success, unless you have perfected some
mechanism for destroying a cruiser without targeting it.

Also: Has anyone ever been promoted ABOVE Lt. Col
in WC1: SM2?

Respectfully,

Brian P.

That may well be. But I think it is impossible to get promoted above Lt.Col. in Wc1 and its add-ons.

BTW: Hitting sth as large as a Fralthi is quite easy, even without targeting it. ;)

The mission isn't failed if you destroy them -- he just yells at you. Doesn't affect promotions or medals.

Hey this is gonna make a lot of you laugh. I am an old fogie of WC. Ive played the series since WC1. I just finsihed up the 1st campaign again(WC1/SM1/SM2). I had a memory of becoming Colonel a long time ago but it must just be the pot <G>. Anyways, Ive never been able to get the Pewter Planet (Medal of Honor) in all the years Ive played. I heard there were only two missions you could get it, which ones? And how? I dont use cheats or anything, and Im a farily good flier. Ive killed every ship in that last mission in WC1 before but they never gave me a medal. What gives? Not even a bronze star (I get a ridiculous number of those :) ). BTW, whats the most medals anyones ever gotten in WC1? I dont remember mine, but on average i think I get about 8 B stars, 2-3 silvers (these are harder to get than golds believe it or not), and maybe 4-6 golds. And BTW, I NEVER get a golden sun...unless I do it on purpose for the extra decoration :). They should bring back the medals system if they ever make a new WC, its great. Promotions too.

You can get a Pewter Planet at Venice 4 (in WC1, the last winning mission) by scoring 243 medal points, or at Charon 1 (next to last mission of SM2) by scoring 165 medal points.

I can go into specifics if you want, but you essentially have to kill everything yourself <G>

Is that any change from the usual missions? When do I not have to kill everything myself?

What are medal points? How do you get them? I never got into the technical side of WC, never figured how they calculate medals promos etc.

No need to, as LOAF said, just kill as much as possible by yourself. It's probably best to do it on the Charon mission, the last WC1 mission doesn't save your Pewter Planet.

Hmm, I think if you lose Hunter on that last mission you don't get the Pewter Planet too. That's why I sent him home after icing the Fralthi.

Luckily I happened to have agame of WC1 saved right on Charon 1 :). I tried beating it once, but since my joysticks broken I had to use the keyboard. Suffice it to say it's a LOT harder with a keyboard. Im getting a new stick today though, so by tonight I will hopefully have my first Pewter Planet. BTW, why does Maniac have to fly my wing?

Maniac - "Madhouse, Im getting trashed! Get your tail over here and help me!"
Me - "Return to base Maniac!"
Maniac - "What?"
Kilrathi - "A proper fate for a coward"

Yeah, yeah, I know everyone plays with a joystick, but I don't think I could manage on anything except a keyboard. All the buttons are there for you, no hand switching or whatever.

Playing in a VR setting like BattleTech needs a joystick, though. That was fun!

But hasn't the keyboard the problem that you can't press two keys at once? I mean you can press two keys but only one will react?

You're thinking of keyboards in 1956.

Just to say that the poor Maniac had waited for a long time to be promoted and get a squadron: from WC3 to WCPSO, he is only Major, while Blair, "the hero of the Confederation" is Commodore...

Maniac had a squadron in SO2. He WASTED it, and, let's face it, noone wanted to use the Morningstar because NOBODY WANTS A THERMONUCLEAR MISSILE HANGING ON THEIR REAR END, waiting for the enemy to shoot it off! Which is precisely what happened everytime I shot the damn thing off. Maniac made Major in SO2, by the way...so he's been a major for even longer!

Ok LOAF... :)
But you know what Mekt meant...

In WC I and II, you can't press more than two keys at once, or the first keys will get "locked" until you stop pressing them.
For example try moving the fighter in two directions at once (e.g. up+right) and firing at the same time... if you continue to fire, even if you release the direction keys, your fighter will continue going in the up+right direction.
Happened to me all the time, and that's why I had to stop using the keyboard in WC III... just didn't work out anymore... :(

Yes, you're right, I forgot it... since SO2... well, really poor guy... crazy but unfortunate... Even Bondarevski is more lucky...
