Problem 0: Game Movies Are Easy Targets (May 31, 2006)

Heart of the Tiger found a Wing Commander mention in the June 2006 issue of PSM. The magazine attempts to explain why "Hollywood hates us" by running down the typical list of complaints. The article makes claims such as "there hasn't been a big hit" and "game stories are weak" while ignoring a number of major exceptions. Oh well, you can't win them all. The shot below is a bit blurry, but you're not missing too much.

A few of the movies on their list are pretty bad, but a few are really good too.

The review quote from WC is actually a complement to the games, which apparently are not sucked into sci-fi cliches.

I rather enjoyed Doom, I mean it was no better than say your average arnie action movie, but millions watch them, they're fun. It wouldn't have worked as anything more intelligent IMO. I like WC and Resi Evil Apocalypse (I know how bad both technically are, but I can't help but enjoy them). Without starting another debate on the WC movie I always viewed it as having more holes than a block of swiss cheese but being altogether enjoyable and underrated.

Doom made as sense as having Peter Paker being the last survivor of Planet Aractus, or the Kilrathi being cigarrete-soming dogs from Atlantis.

But was it a fun movie to watch? I haven't seen it, but it seems like lots of people enjoyed watching it. Lots of movies have tons of technical flaws that critics can pick apart. But video game players just go crazy and pick apart video game movies because it's what they know. It's always Star Wars fans complaining the loudest about Star Wars movies. Regular people just see them as the average sci-fi films they are. It's always kind of sad to see people canabalize their entertainment this way. These movies don't get held to regular good/bad standards that most people have when they see normal movies.

Yes, Doom was (at least, in my opinion) a fun movie to watch. The setting has very, very little to do with Doom, but as long as that doesn't bother you, and as long as you don't watch it expecting the greatest movie in the world, it's pretty fun.

I don't mind Z-movies. I think Starship Troopers 2 is fun. But at least it is a bit about the same stuff as Starship Troops.

Doom can still be fun and make no sense. Hey, there's a case to be made about cigarette somking dogs from Atlantis.
