i must agree with Quarto, for the simple reason that we know that the turrets in WC can be remotely operated (one of the books, either 3 or 4) and also be controlled by a gunner inside the turret. the ship flying in a straight line when you are using the turret can be explained by the fact that the turret control takes up your attention. And, as Quarto pointed out, it is an instantaeous transition from cockpit to turret view.

Well, I don't remember that detail on Priv. On WC2, we did see the gunner's legs, so someone was actually sitting on it, like on a WW2 bomber (or the Millenium Falcon).

Let's go with the controlled turrets. The concept is still problematic, because you lose control of the fighter in order to use the turrets. You did too in the Broadsword or the Devastator, but hey, they would work regardless of your interference.

This renders turrets in Privateer virtually useless. A galaxy with multiple well-armed turrets firing simultaneously and flying evasive action would be much better. Even without Olympic sprinters. :)

One would think that by the 27th century it would be possible to have a gunnery computer control the turrets. Sure it would be less effective than having a human control them, but at least they wouldn't sit idle. As it is, the only time I really use my turret guns is when I am doing a "run and gun", flying towards or away from a nav point/jump point. It annoys me no end that your turret will not fire on the enemy tailing you while you are flying the ship.

Back to the Tarsus question.

About beating the game with just a Tarsus...

anyone ever manage to do so?

Well... it's a nice little ship, and your grandfather gave it to you...
and it sure has some nice upgrades in RF...

Oh, absolutely. However it is that they are controlled, their lack of automatic control makes them suck.

The turrets in the 'military' games are operated by separate gunners... you see them mentioned a number of times in WC2 ("Meron's dead!") and in the novels. They *can* make the turrets computer controlled, but it's not supposed to be very effective for anything but keeping enemy fighters off your six (Blair comments on this in the WCIV novel).

The guns in Privateer didn't have gunners and they wouldn't operate automatically... you had to walk back there and use them yourself.

Well, that's the thing with Privateer. It would be nice to be able to have them computer-controlled. As inefficient as it would be (story-wise, since game-wise everything is computer-controlled) it's probably better than have them doing nothing at all. Or you could hire some people to operate them. Like wingmen on Priv2, only they would fly inside your ship and operate your turrets, on more difficult missions. Elite II: Frontier had such feature.

This feature would me the Galaxy a particulary interesting ship to fly, since we could place very good guns in the turrets, for a change. :)

The RFB Centuruion SE model 2075.

(before anyone goes nutz, its my own modified Centurion, not standard equipped Centurion from the game)

Works wonders in RF.

But for the standard issue Centurion, my specs are....

P1-Centurion 2069
6 Tachyon cannons
2 IR missile launchers
1 Tractor beam (turret mounted)
Lvl 3 engines/shields

RF-Centurion 2069
6 Fusion cannons
2 IR missile launchers
1 Tractor beam (turret mounted)
Gun Cooler
Lvl 4 engines/shields

Must make a comment on the specs of the Fusion cannon vs Plasma cannon.

The Fusion cannon is only 6.2 damage points vs Plasam cannon's 7. This is directly from the TRE file, not assumed fan fic specs. Offically, to me anyway (and should be otherwise since it is directly from the game TRE file), what is in the game IS offical as far as specs go for equipment. What is printed on paper, doesnt reflect what happens in the game, or what is written in the code in the weapons data of the TRE file.

IMO, the Plasma cannons are better than the Fusion cannons, they just fire way too darn slow, even with the gun cooler in RF.

Overall, the best gun for both P1 and RF are the Tachyon guns.

IMO

Wait, can a Centurion have 6 guns in her wingtips?
I thought that is 4 in the wings + 2 in the turret.
