Victory, you say?
Sure, the Centurion rocks. But that's no the question here. In which ship did you have the most fun on Privateer?

Well,you said it yourself,the Centurion.....cause Its half a Fighter,and I kick ass with it ;)

Centurion, of course. 5th best fighter out there, right behind the dragon (1) excal (2) vampire (3) and raptor (4). the fact it could carry the most guns that you could use at one time probably had something to do with it too.

The idea here is to know which ship you had the most fun, not simply the best ship, or the best fighter. Of course the Centurion is a superior fighter. But some people might have had more fun on a different ship.

You've got the beginning, with the Tarsus, which was very cool.

There's the midgame, with the Orion, when you first get the felling you have a cool ship.

And of course there is the alternative course of using the galaxy.

I think the Centurion and Galaxy perform their roles the best, whether for business or fun. The Orion is indeed a tank, but once its defences are battered down it's pretty much dead because the shields recharge very slowly. And I really didn't have much fun with the Tarsus. Sure, it's the worst of everything, but I don't call that fun.

I`ve had most fun with Tarsus because I used it for the most part of the game earning money for Centurion and for some good quality equipment for him (I`ve had no mid-time period on Orion).

You really should spend some time in the Orion and Galaxy. You'll spend enough time in the game in the Centurion...

The Tarsus is generally inferior in everything unless it is the Righteous Fire version where you can get decent shield and armor upgrades. It not only has the thinnest shields and armor in the game, but it is also the slowest ship. Upgrade to something else before taking on the main plot missions unless you like the extra challenge.

The Orion has decent speed and the heaviest shields armor in the game--you're more likely to have your external systems destroyed and want to reload your saved game anyway than you are to have your armor entirely destroyed. Its chief drawback in my opinion is that it is the only ship that cannot mount two missile launchers. That sucks because a salvo of two missiles can destroy anything lighter than a Dralthi--I like to use missiles to take out the first enemy quickly whenever I am outnumbered more than three to one. However, for somebody who prefers gun kills and wants protection and a low-cost ship, the Orion is a good choice.

The Galaxy is my personal favorite. It has everything better than the Tarsus--more speed, more shields and armor, more cargo space, and the top and bottom turrets. While it may be a little slower than the Orion and have less shields and armor, it makes up for that by having that all-important second missile launcher. It's fairly middle-of-the-road as a fighting craft (too bad the turrets don't auto-fire in Privateer!), but I love being able to tractor in the salvage after battling pirates and then sell it for cash!

The Centurion is the civilian counterpart to the Rapier--it sports two missile launchers, four guns, decent but not heavy shields and armor, and is quite fast. While some players prefer to use four of the same gun type for a massive volley (usually Tachyon or Particle cannons), I prefer to use one pair of fast-firing long range guns plus a second pair of heavy-hitting short range ones (such as Tachyon and Ion or Particle and Neutron). The Centurion is the ship of choice for the player who wants lots of attack power.

What I really think that Privateer should have had, though, is a light and fast fighter. Something that flies 600/1200 kps with better agility than the Centurion, level 3 shields but half the armor of the Centurion, no rear turret and 2 missile launchers/2 guns.

I went through the standard Tarsus-Orion-Centurion upgrade course. And, while the Centurion is of course the most powerful, I guess I'd vote for the Tarsus. You risked dying every time you went into combat, you sometimes had to run away, and sometimes you had to spend several thousand credits after a barely-won fight just to bring your ship back up to a reasonable state - indeed, sometimes you had to make tough choices because you simply didn't have the cash to repair everything.
Once you got to the Orion, everything got safer, and once you got to the Centurion, all the danger just disappeared.

After finishing the game, I actually always wanted to sell the Centurion and try playing in the Galaxy (it had such a cool cockpit), but, since Priv quickly got boring after you ran out of storyline missions, I never really got around to it. I still want to, but I've never gotten around to getting Priv and Armada to run under XP.

I always go for the Tarsus-Galaxy-Centurion upgrade course.
The Orion´s cockpit visibility is too small, also don´t like his cargo capability (preffr the Centurion one with the cargo add).

Both times I played it straight it was Tarsus-Orion-Centurion. I played a little with the Galaxy to try it, but, as it has been pointed out before, it's pretty much useless without the auto-turrets. If at least you could hire crew to use the turrets, even if you had to pay them, it would be a much more interesting ship. I think "Elite II: Frontier" allowed you to do it.

i usually do the Tarsus, Orion, Centurion. Tarsus is fine for the begining, but once you start running into multiple talons with particle cannons, you need something with more armor, hence the Orion, till you can afford the Centurion. Orion is alright, but turns like a brick in mud, but is the closest to invincible you can get. and, of course, the Centurion is without fault (if you play like me and don't do alot of cargo runs).

The Centurion is nearly that fast.. especially in Righteous Fire.

Well I meant it would be that fast WITHOUT the engine-booster upgrades. With them it would be even faster--like 725/1350 kps.

Here's a question:

HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY FINISHED THE ORIGINAL PRIVATEER GAME BY JUST USING YOUR GRANDPA's TARSUS?

You mean a fully upgraded Tarsus? Of course. With the "original" single laser Tarsus it might a bit hard, though.

And RF's a whole different story, too. Took me an awful lot of tries to beat that retro leader guy even with the Orion.
