Privateer Newbie Help

Hey all.

I wasn't sure where else to ask this, so here I am. I just started Privateer, purchased a laser cannon, and joined the Merchant's Guild.

The real deal is this: I have a laser cannon. But I launch from the Achilles mining base (the place where you start the game) and lo and behold, pressing the fire button on my joystick does nothing. No lasers fire. The "Energy" indicator doesn't go down. And yes, I made sure that the laser cannon was actually installed -- it appeared on my ship when I bought it. I can even sell it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Robert Aronson (Kalor)

You have to arm your guns when you launch from station, they don't start out already active. Hit 1 (or 1-4 if you have more than one gun mounted) or "g" to arm your gun(s).

And you might want to consider getting a pair of Mass Drivers soon, that one laser ain't going to get you very far.

I prefer to stick with a couple of lasers and 20 FF missiles and stick to doing cargo missions. That way, you're less likely to get attacked, and if you do, the missiles should make short work of the attackers, provided you don't stray too far into systems where there are lots of kilrathi.

Personally I'd get a Mass Driver at the start. Then upgrade to Meson Blasters as soon as possible don't bother with better guns unless you are REALLY rich then.

I usually sell all my guns and missiles, buy an afterburner and do simple 5 point patrol missions.

If it's done right, it is a quick, and a rather safe way to make your first 20,000 credits.

Not if some talons decide to afterburn after you, with their superior speed and manuverability.
They either never did that, or you could activate the autopilot anyway, once you are 1000 kms away from a jumppoint.

It was really easy money.

It was a lot more than 1000 klicks, and it was that distance from the nearest enemy fighter, not the jump point. I don't see how you could consistently get away. You'd end up afterburning through the entire system. It'd be a lot faster and easier for me to just kill the Talons.

Hmmm, might have to install Privateer again. But I definately do remember that that was the way I earned easy money.

Unarmed Tarsus + Afterburner + Patrol missions.

Yeah, even with AB the Tarsus is too slow. And patrol missions are filled with foes, especially if you take more the one at the same time.

High,

usually I sell the Laser, the Dumpfires and the Hyperdrive. Buy some FF's and search for Missions where you have to kill Retros and fill up the Cargospace with the usually items to sell with profit. If I meet pirates, I beg for pardon and after a while the pirates won't bother me. As soon as possible I buy another Rocketlauncher enter the Mercenaries Guild and make (well paid) insystem patrolruns, still hunting only for Retros. With this tactic I'm making fast and easy money.

Instead of FoF missiles, you may want to consider ImRecs. They have the same damage as FoFs, but you can assign them to specific targets, and not worry about them wandering off to hit some other ship. Just lock onto the target (you start out with a locking radar) and do your best Sir Robin impression ("brave Sir Robin, bravely running away") while lobbing missiles over your shoulder. Two IRs will pot a Talon, so when you get a second missile launcher it's not too difficult for a "double tap", while either running or gunning another ship (though the latter requires practice, since you have to keep lock on the missile target, so no ITTS on radars so equipped).
