Privateer idea

I don't know what version you guys are running, but I just checked two minutes ago that the Centurion is the only ship which can't accept the cargo expansion. There is absolutely nothing - and I mean nothing - between the option to buy a laser, and the option to buy ECM Level 3.

Just because Burrows doesn't eject the artifact doesn't mean that he has a secret cargo hold :) (Further, it's not contraband, so Confed has no reason to complain when they find it in his manifest...)

There's nothing *anywhere* that indicates that the Cent can have a cargo expansion -- not in the manual, not in the game.

The manual says just that, page 45, "Capacidade de carga 50 unidades (75 com expansão de carga)", page 56 "Expansão de carga volume varia com a nave.nem todas as naves permitem uma expansão interna de carga -verifique o manual da sua nave antes de comprar uma expansão de carga. ..."
My manual is on PDF and in portuguese but its says that a cargo expaction is avaible to the Centurion, I even put one.

Stuffing the artefact under the seat would be a good idea. Considering it fit in his hand, I don't think one cubic metre of space would be needed to hold it.

Then again, I could be wrong. It could have weird properties...

And with regards to guns, four tachyon all the way on the Centurion! Top level engine, second top shields, leaves plenty of energy. Azrael is right, four lasers are the second best non Steltek combination.

The American manual doesn't list an expansion in the "cargo hold" area -- and the "performance rating" paragraph specifically states "inability to support a cargo hold expansion" as being "a definite turn-off".

Really? Then why do I not see it in the items list in the repair/upgrade shop? You see it for the Orion and Galaxy tho! Maybe you thought you were in a Centurion but actually in one of the other ships, or your version has a bug! Anythings possible!! It would be nice if you could get a cargo expansion for the Centurion. I check both my CD versions and the floppy versions of the game, no cargo expansion for the Centurion. But you could consider the "secret hold" as an expansion since it does take in things like ejected pilots, contraband, anything that the militia or confed would consider contraband. When it gets full the things you pick up get stowed in the regular scanable cargo holds.

The German manual for Priv also states that a Centurion can use a cargo expansion. But I also think it was a fault because I cannot remember being able to install one. Perhaps you can buy it in RF?

The cargo expansion does not appear in the item table in RF either. I think its a missprint in the different versions, or perhaps the different versions may have the ability for the expanded cargo hold. More inconsistancies, much like the timeline debate.

So there were Privateers distributed in non-English-speaking countries which give the advantage of cargo expansions on a Centurion. Sounds a little unfair to me. :(

It's possible that the original plan for Privateer was to have a cargo expansion -- if they wanted a day and date release in Germany and the US, they'd have translated the manual *before* stats were finalized... this happened with Prophecy, which is why the 'Null-G Bomblets' appear in the Singapore printing of the ICIS manual...

(It's actually quite frequent -- and it's why you generally don't have specific stats in game manuals anymore)

Even without the cargo expansion, you still could make as much money on cargo missions from the merchants guild or mission computer in ships that could sport the expansion and the Centurion that couldnt. Either way, you could only take on 3 missions at a time, where I would try to get all 3 missions with cargo runs going to the same location. I dont think the cargo expansion did anything for the cargo missions, but it did give you ability to purchase commodities in more quantity or tractor in more cargo than you could without one. So the expanded cargo thing is really just something to spend money on that ends up being useless! Example you could get 3 missions of cargo runs in the Centurion which does not have the cargo expansion and yeild 20 to 30 thou credits total, and get the same amount in pay in the Galaxy or Orion. So to me the cargo expansion was kinda a money drain, cept when you picked up a hord of ejected pilots!! But with that you run into the chance of being scanned and busted!!!

The artifact is only a rock with some drawing on it (you see it several times), so why it would be contraband?

alien artifact

Well it isnt contraband, but if there were alot of orginizations, including Confed looking for that piece of artifact along with Monkhouse's piece to find something significant, its understandable how death followed that thing. (Tayla quote). Even the cats were looking for Monkhouse and his artifact. They knew something, as did Confed in having the ES map the hind end of the frontier. Such an item with that much importance is understandable to keep it away from those orginizations hunting for it.

That maping missions were only a convinient way to find that derelic "thing" at the correct time.
ConFed was not looking for it in the first place.
If you read all that back in Oxford, there is a dig site on Mars, ConFed is most likely still looking in there for anwers about the Steltek.

That doesnt mean that Confed ignored the idea that elsewhere in the universe there could be more sites of the Steltek. Just because the only site found was on Mars, didnt exclude the possibility of other sites. The Kilrathi may have found similar sites like Monkhouse did on Mars, and Confed closed that site after theories of the Steltek's exsistance before the Dawn of Intelligence. It is only logical that if a galaxy spanning civilization exsisted, there would be more sites in the universe than just at Mars! And if they exsited for millions of years, that means they were around long before man or the Kilrathi, and if they occupied the whole galaxy, that means Kilrathi space as well. Even the bugs space was probably occupied by the Steltek. You cannot exclude other planets or sectors just because mankind only found one site on Mars. They knew something had to be elsewhere. The cats were there looking too, it just so happens that Brownhair (or whatever his name is) ran into Sandoval who had the 2nd piece of artifact which was a stellar map. It is not a forgone conclusion that Monkhouse found both pieces at the Mars site, and somehow lost half of it or it was stolen. As the storyline plots, that piece Sandoval had, it exchanged hands a number of times. Any one of those people that had that artifact could have said something and someone could have overheard the conversation and reported to Confed. As Brownhair says in the game, "If the Confederation is out here looking for something, it makes sense that the Kilrathi would share their interest". No telling what the Kilrathi found in their sectors of space. No telling what is yet to be found. I think that Confed had some kind of hint that something could be in that part of uncharted space, so they had the ES map it, there were (and still isnt) any usefull areas in that part of the Gemini sector to justify mapping the area. No planets, no asteroids to mine, just open dead space, oh there are a few clusters of asteroids, but nothing else. Seems pretty weird Confed would just map an area of space just for kicks! I doubt at that time since Confed was strapped for funds and replacing their fighters left and right in the hight of the war they would be willing to spend the resources on such a mapping operation. Hence they hired the ES to do it. Tarin Cross said it herself, "If I dont get this sector mapped soon, the "brass" will have my rear!" By that she means Confed! So they had to have some idea of something being out there. Why would they close the Mars site, just because of a theory?,...I think not!

1) ConFed did not know what was out there, they only know about possible jump points, that is why they send you there in the first place.
2) If they know about that strange base, why sould they send a privateer there?
Its just a way for us not to jump there before why have all the artifact.

The conversation with Taryn Cross after you discover the Kilrathi make it clear that Confed *is* searching for something in the area -- and that they haven't told ES what it is.
