Privateer 2 Remake ?

Hello there,

back in the day i played Privateer 2 quite obsessively, especially the dark yberpunk atmosphere gets me. Even today. I haven't played WC or Privateer 1 before so i didn't miss or expected the Kilrathi or anything from this universe. So I see actually see the Game more like a standalone product.

I found this forums and seen a few threads about editing and extracting Privateer 2 stuff, so i wonder if somebody is trying a remake or mod or something like that.

SER GALLAHAD!!!!!

I wouldn't want to see a remake, the style of the game is just perfect and a new engine would change the spirit. All I'd want to see would be a re-balanced version of the original game without the ridiculously unplayable settings after about 30+ hours of ingame time (when you moneycount is 100k+ and you can easily spend 20 minutes and more at one single navpoint with pirates spawning and spawning and throwing hundreds of missiles at you).

Really ? I'm not talking about a awlful "Star-Wars-Special-Edition-CGI-" mess, i mean more something like a clean up, more polygon, native windows/linux support, usb-flightstick/optional mouse support type :)

Personally i'm reluctant to reinstall it on my windows 7 system, last time i've done it on my Pentium 4 system, i got problems with the Sidewinder 3D calibration, Creative Soundcard detection and the unlimited gamespeed.

Wasn't there something done before with the original Privateer ? Privateer Gemini Gold?

Yeah, the Vega Strike guys did something with P1 a few years back...there's was a reasonably decent re-do, though you could still see bits and pieces of Vega Strike underneath.

As for Privateer Gemini Gold, I tried it out. Got sick of it the fourth time in a row I got smoked by pirates on a run from Hector to Helen. Somebody really jacked up the difficulty on that one...its worse than WC4, definitely in the "bastard hard" category.

Both P1 and P2 are well-supported in the latest version of DOSBox (with P2 classed as "fully supported" in version 0.74).

Oh, I'd love to see a P2 remake - maybe this time round, it could have at least decent gameplay to go with those great movies...

Not that it didn't have issues, it was buggy, the AI was dissapointing etc, but personally I still found P2 to be a great game (but then I didn't try flying it with a mouse).
Like WCIV (which IMO had some balancing issues) I felt a little TLC would have made a world of difference, but I enjoyed both greatly. I don't think a remake of P2 would be called for, but I'd certainly welcome an update with minor improvements.

We have some stuff on the back burner to make P2 run well on modern machines... Word is that you might also see the game pop up on GOG in the future.

Anyway, if we get that far there may be some stuff that can be done to iron out the bugs in the game. We'll see. But as far as a fan remake? There aren't current plans.
