Freezes actually, with the music still on and stuck. Usually happens before events accruing-enemy ships jumping to my area, me jumping and specially after picking the last cargo of a former escort mission near lironas.

Download "D-Fend Reloaded", one of the many DOSBox frontends, though I think the best. I have the DOS 3 CD version, tried doing the convert to PC patch and had no luck.

If your using the CDs, make ISO files of them and create a virtual drive with Daemon Tools or another of your choosing.

General settings with D-fend are:
I solved it on this way:

Get DosBox 0.72, install it.

Open DOSBox.conf and edit these lines:

core=dynamic

and increase the value of cycles up to 40000:

cycles=40000

at end of the file add the lines:

mount d f:\ -t cdrom -ioctl
mount c c:\Dark\

Finally edit the soundsettings with SOUNDSET.EXE.
For both - midi music and digital sound - use
"Creative Labs Sound Blaster or 100% compatible".

There is a Privateer 2 DOS patch that addresses sound/crash problems, google it and patch the game. If you cannot find it, PM me and I'll send it.

In d-fend, in memory tab
;
set memory to 60mb
use xms memory
use ems memory
enable loadfix with memory in kb at 64
enable DOS32A Extender

In Graphics Tab;
set render to ddraw
set video card to svga_s3
frameskip = 0
set Scale to "high quality with factor 3 (hq3x

As for the game itself, the speed will vary between spaceflight and when you are docked at a planet or base. What is normal in spaceflight (speedwise) is super-fast on a planet/base. Use "control+F11" and "control+f12" to speed-up and speed-down the CPU speed.

I've still the game on my hard-drive, I started playing about 5 months ago and still play it on-and-off. If you have the "abondonware site" freebie, consider buying the CD version on Amazon or some-such site; the video and movie portions of the game are worth the purchase and, the DOS version is not that expensive at all- it's a classic!!!

Again, PM me with any questions if you want- the settings vary depending on your PC; you'll have to fiddle with the settings to get the game running the way you like for best performance.

OH, also, if you used the patch to convert the DOS version to Windows , it will not work correctly in DOSBox. If this is the case, delete the game and and re-install.

Good luck!;)
