Privateer 1: DOS sound problem, please help!

Ok, so I recently set up a computer with MS DOS on it to play all my old games and have been having trouble with the sound in privateer. The music works fine but the sound is badly distorted. I have tried running the game using both a AWE64 and a Vibra 16 and both do the same thing. This is a very frustrating problem and I would appreciate any insight.

I don’t ever remember getting stuff to work under MS DOS being this hard, I'm having problems with Strike Commander as well. I never thought I would be glad to see the end of DOS but I am now!


Oh, sorry if this has come up before. but there are 64 pages in the tech support forum and I'm not going to go through them all....
 
This is a classic Priv1 problem with an easy and well known solution. Apparently the game doesn't like having more than 16MB available, so change your emm386.exe line in your config.sys to:

device=c:\windows\emm386.exe 16384 ram

that should do it. :)
