In the original, it was based solely on kills. It certainly seemed that way, anyway. I remember just flying around in the tarsus killing pirates and retros. The game quickly got to the point, where I basically couldn't get through a system without having to kill 5+ birds.
 
I've completed many of the 300k+ missions, was finally able to buy myself a milspec Paradigm for 8.7 mill, and damn that thing is slow but has a ton of firepower. Those defense missions are a cinch once you get a tweaked out hunter, mine has full armor and milspec armor upgrades, engine and milspec engine enhancements, 4 Fusion cannons with autotracking, gun cooling, the works.

SUBSPACE! Damn, thank you! I played that game AEONS ago and loved it - then the company went down the hill and with them the game. I never realized it was brought back from the dead.
