Old Wing Commander 1 Book

I'm trying to find a old Wing Commander 1 book. I can't remember the name but it was about a foot long and about .5" thick. It told the story of Maverick (main char in WC series) coming up through the academy and so on. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

For a time reference, it was out on the shelves 12 years ago (1993ish).

Sounds like Wing Commander I & II: The Ultimate Strategy Guide by
Mike Harrison, 1991, Prima Publishing, ISBN 1-55958-129-8. 286pp. Its main character is Carl LaFong.
