Number of capships

What was the greatest number of capital ships that both the Terran Confederation and Kilrathi Empire had at any one time?

Well since the galaxy is a really big place (really), and protecting star systems would probably have to be equal to twice the size of the US Pacific Fleet.....I would give a rough estimate at around a couple of hundred hornets' nests worth.

IIRC, the number of fleet carriers was never all that great, and at one time Confed was down to just a handfull (End Run.)

Best, Raptor

Well the WCP manual says that they were going to build 10 Midways. Add the Vesuvii, and I'd say they'd have about 20 fleet carriers. The Midways would most likely replace any remaining Concordia/Confederation class vessels. Oops. I should mention that 20 includes any surviving Concordias. But once those older ships are retired the figure would probably drop to about 15. The impression I've gotten from hanging out at this board is that Confed never had many carriers at all, war or peacetime.

I always had the impression that there were a lot of light carriers around during wartime, though.

Doesn't End Run say somewhere that 8 or 9 freighters were converted into escort carriers, and that those are all the Tarawa-style CVEs around?

I wonder why they never made more of those, and why they sold the remaining ones to the BW after the war.... the Tarawa's technological shortcomings seemed to be surpassed only by its awful lot of luck <G>

Well, realistically those shortcomings were just not Confed's style, is how I'm guessing. Confed's all about trying to keep certain rules/safety procedures into effect, which kinda cuts out the Tarawa's class. (After all, just remember how Jason felt about the fighters being all lined up!) But the BW/Landreich, hell they don't care what they have as long as it's servicable. :) (Look at how they convert destroyers, etc. into carriers! As long as it works!)

The Tarawa class certainly can pull its own weight in certain situations. Yes they are very small, but their maneuvering capability is at least 3x that of a Concordia class ship. And I mean really, if you have a great commander, like Jason, those things are just kickin everyone's ass.

I agree with pygmypiranha there. A resourceful crew on a jeep like the Tarawa can turn things around for the better.

Of course they'd have to be resourceful. Imagine what could be pulled off if they had a 'real' carrier at their disposal.
