Now You See It... (March 26, 2008)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
St3lt3k has found another neat Lego Wing Commander creation on Brickshelf - a Kilrathi Strakha stealth fighter! This is the model seen in Wing Commander III -- the sharp, knife-like production variant rather than the square prototypes seen in Wing Commander II and Academy. The creator of the model seems to be 'Cylon13' -- if you're out there, great work! Now lets see the same thing in all clear bricks...

...Now You Don't

Nice one! You know, there's a way to order custom models at the LEGO online shop - and I'd love to have a LEGO Wing Commander model...! The selection of bricks is somewhat limited, though, as is the color choice. I wonder if the Strakha could be done...

Now all we need is a decent Kilrathi minifig! :p

(And I admit I bought a LEGO Indiana Jones set last week just because it had Indy and his father in it. So come on, LEGO, bring on some WC stuff already! :p)

I've actually been buying some Legos recently -- I was so happy to see that they're doing a straight 'Space' theme again after years of just Star Wars that I couldn't help myself.

He he... I like Mars Mission's "Recon Dropship" - kinda reminds me of Alien's "Nostromo". (Or Space 2063's "Hammerhead" fighter, I'm not sure...)

I still have a lot of classic LEGO sets back from the Futuron theme (always wished for that Monorail - in vain), Space Police (including the big cruiser), M:Tron (almost complete), and one last fighter, glider or whatever from the Ice Planet theme. Guess it's time to have children - I want to play with LEGO again! :D

We are very, very, very similar -- that's basically my exact same childhood, down to lusting after the monorail (to this day!) and ending with just one Ice Planet set.

Instead of having kids I basically just decided that I still enjoy playing with Legos and that now that I'm an adult and can afford them I really shouldn't feel bad about buying a kit every once in a while. There are worse vices to have!

I used to have the Techniques set that had instructions to be either a float plane or a space shuttle... Unfortunately some little kids made their way into my room when I wasn't home and tried to make it fly.

I collected so many Legos growing up - I really like their space themes prior to the Star Wars collection.

It's kind of funny now - I wanted to replace a ship from my collection that was irrevocably harmed in a fire, the Aerial Intruder from Blacktron II. When searching on Ebay, it is amazing to see how high the prices are for some of those ships! I haven't been able to bring myself to spend the money, but I'm sure one day will find me weak and unable to refuse.

Wing Commander was an important influence in my desire to collect the space legos. I used to create fighters, then divide them up by weight, role, and size much the way WC does. Great times!

I remember having a whole medium sized suitcase full of Lego parts, most of them from the "generic stuff" sets that used to be readily available, combined with assorted "old school" space sets and other things. Unfortunately, a lot of the good pieces wound up becoming chewtoys thanks to an idiot brother, and eventually I got rid of the whole mess, as I thought I had gotten beyond the stage where they were a good thing.

I miss that collection, sometimes, warts and all.

(Can't say I'm all that keen on the current set options, but I'm not exactly unknown for being an "old fart" about changes over the years. :p )
