Joachim Froholt from Gamer.no has posted an awesome retrospective article about the original Wing Commander. The piece is in Norwegian, so be sure to pass it along to any friends who speak the language. Everyone can get the gist of it though via Google Translate. The pictures used throughout the article are actually from the original Amiga version of Wing Commander, which featured less advanced graphics. If you haven't played that version, it's actually very cool to see what they did with a smaller color palette. Check it out here!

The limited palette actually makes the ships look less cartoonish.

How is the playability of the amiga version anyway? I actually found the Sega version near-unplayable later on when there are lots of objects in the screen.

There's also a 256-color Amiga version, for the Amiga CD32.

I would say that the Amiga version feels just like the PC one--although at the time most people had Amiga 500s, which was NOT enough computer to really run it well.

It really depends on what machine you had. It was pretty smooth on the a1200, but on my a600 like loaf says, it was very choppy and sluggish. The music was pretty sweet though (it was different to the pc version!)

I actually got my first taste of wing commander on the Amiga. It was pretty good on an a1200 which one of my friends was lucky enough to have.

Yes! If you aren't an Amiga person, it was kind of like playing Wing Commander on a 286 when it came out (which was also what most PC people had at the time--but I think there was a cultural difference where Wing Commander made PC users want to upgrade and it made many Amiga users just kind of mad).
