Someone over at EA is working the Thanksgiving break, and they've posted an interview with Command & Conquer 3's cinematics director. The company appears to be taking the game's live action FMV component very seriously, and we're all interested to see how it turns out. A couple of new photographs from the set have been released, and they reveal a wonderful mix of detailed physical sets combined with areas marked for green-screen CGI.

Q: Command & Conquer helped define the gaming genre back in 1995 when it introduced story-telling in video games through Full Motion Videos, i.e. live action. How are you taking the live action cinematics in Command & Conquer 3 to a new level of story-telling in video games?

A: There are a lot of things we're doing to improve the storytelling in C&C 3. First we have a script that has a lot more intricate and interesting human interaction, more emotion. Also there's a more complex storyline running throughout the game...
Surely they mean "introduced story-telling in video games through Full Motion Videos" to the franchise. Wing Commander 3 sported a wider range of CGI environments and arrived nearly a year before the first C&C game. And here's another interesting quote.
Q: Why do you think live action videos were the right fit to tell the story in C&C 3?

A: First of all this franchise has a tradition of live action sequences for the cut scene material, but to me the most important thing is the believability and the emotional impact the player feels when a real human being looks you in the eye.
You can find the full interview here.

Wow, I just checked out the trailers for this and man EA may actually be making an awesome addition to an old franchise.

As for what I read from the interview, it seems like there will be a lot more to the movies than just mission-related storyline.

There was one thing I read in there about this being almost like a feature film. Well, the amount of film may be over an hour, but this gets split over 3 factions meaning over 20 minutes viewed per faction. Well, this could get decreased if your actions affect which videos are shown meaning it is very short for a feature film. (yeah, I know--all pretty obvious)

Its possible and probably very likely if C&C III turns out to be a super hit--which would seem to be the case. :)

C&C III has got a great chance of becoming a super-hit, not just with its fans but to new comers alike. Thats the sort of prospect we'd expect (hopefully) when a new WC game arrives to our stores. Very soon.
