Need help with DosBox

I've installed 0.63 DosBox, and I barely know what i'm doing. I got my Wc1 Delux (3.5 floppys) version to run, but the game itself is a little slow and it lags in combat. What can I do to fix this?

Also, how do I get the Secret Missions floppys to run on DosBox?
 
When you first load up DOSBox, there's a colored box in the middle of the screen that explains how you can hit Control+F12 to increase the speed. Getting Secret Missions to run in DOSBox is no different from getting Wing Commander 1 to run. Are you having some particular problem?
 
Ok. I got the Secret Missions working (kinda weird how SM1 adds on to Wc1 and SM2 does not) and they seem to be running. What are the ideal settings (cycle, frameskip, etc) on DosBox for Wc1? Also, when do I hit Ctrl+F12? The games are still running slow, and when I play SM2, my keyboard doesn't respond in flight.
