movies.tre question...

I've been playing Wing Commander a lot recently, and I never fail to think about the .tre files on the discs of each of the games. So, I had to ask--

Are the .tre files compressed? Is it akin to zipping the movies into a compressed archive and having the game extract or read them when needed? Or is it just made up of all the movies made into one file?

The tre files hold everything... the movies, game information, 3d models, textures, etc. Various programs can extract the files contained in the tre files. Take a look through the CIC Files section and grap Ripper.

All it is, is one big file with a bunch of files in it. If you want to extract wing commander 4 movies, Get my Wing Commander 4 movie ripping package thats posted in the news section right now. If you want the WC3 movies, a program in the package called tre2list can be used to extract those. You will need the WC3 Movie viewer from the cic's file section to view them though.

I always think its more fun to see the movies by earning them through the game. Just save the game frequently and you cna pretty much see what you want.

I see, thanks for your answers... I'd imagine that accessing the movies would require that they not be compressed, unless the game handled that at some point before the movie could be accessed. For example, the opening. While the Origin logo displays, it could be uncompressing the opening, unless that would take too much in the way of processor resources...

Oh, the movies? I thought you just meant .TRE files. The movies are all compressed. They're uncompressed on the fly whenever the game needs to play one. It's not like it takes five hours to uncompress a movie.

I know that, I just meant that maybe it would take a lot of processing power away from other parts of the game while the movies are being uncompressed... like slowdown during a flight as a Rollins movie is being uncompressed or something.
