The playtest research is apparently done at the Redmond, WA offices and the "free gift for participating" may be a piece of Microsoft software.

The registration form also seems to be used for market research

One time when I did this I arrived late or they screwed up the paper work or something, so I didn't even have to do anything. I sat in the lobby for five minutes, then they gave me a ticket to go to the redemption center. I got a copy of Windows XP Pro. They have a long list and you just pick whatever off it.
