I'm not sure this is the right area to post this, but I figure since I'm doing kind of editting that maybe it is.

I'm sure this is an age old question... I'm reworking and setting up my own version of the sector maps, and have a scanned version of the universe map that came with most WCP games. At this point I'm not entirly sure whether I'll develope this into a fiction series or maybe at a much later date persue it as a mod. I whipped a few files of html full of storyline stuff that came to me when I first got the idea, but now I see I'm rambling so onto my reason for posting.

After browsing through the CIC's map section, their universe map has extra sectors, and systems in some cases. So I'm just wondering where these extras pop up from? I'm basing my version mostly on the games, rather than a combo of that and the novels, cartoon, etc. I figure it's the combo of the books and so forth that bring about these extra areas.

I imagine the base in general for everything originates from the map provided with WCP (despite its own discrepancies, which I'm sure have some form of explaintion anyway). Are all those extras sectors addons from the likes of novels? I recall a Landreich System, but not a Sector. And what is the purpose of displaying What would otherwise be relativly empty space in the extra sectors beyond the Kilrah Sector etc such as the Hari? Is this just to mark out where the Hari once inhabitted, or do the books, cartoons and other media delve into this?

Unfortunatly I've never had access to the novels and cartoons so I don't know. Any info would be appreciated, as I may yet use the entire map provided by the CIC as my base. And before anyone mentions it, I don't mean editting any of that work, as I'll be reproducing all the sectors maps from scratch myself anyway, as I have with entirly new sectors of my own already.

Thanks

Howdy,

I did the CIC's map upgrade. As you surmised, the maps are based around Captain Johnny's Wing Commander Universe map (the one included with Prophecy).

The additions come from all sorts of places: novels, the TV series, the games, the movies, etc.

Changes based on the novels were generally pretty minor - a system added here or there. The exception is the Landreich Sector, which was put together from some fairly detailed descriptions (# of systems, # of jumps, etc.) from the novels Action Stations and False Colors.

A lot of jump lines based on in-game descriptions were added. Johnny got most of the 'play through' jumps, but generally didn't touch things like Col. Halcyon mentioning where the ship you're escorting jumped in from.

There's lots of minor game stuff added - the 'secret' jump line from Privateer, the Armada Gauntlet's Terragon system, etc.

I guess the biggest 'addition' are the Armada Maps - which are the preset maps found in Wing Commander Armada's campaign mode.

The Hari Sector is empty because we don't really have a good source for mapping it. What systems are there are the ones mentioned in the Fleet Action novel - so you can accurately chart the paths from Hari to Kilrah and Landreich. The newest version of the map has a notation explaining that the Hari Empire was in that region and there were a thousand empty star systems.

Anyway, the version at the CIC isn't actually the most recent... you can find version five here:

There'll be another minor upgrade in the near future - though this one is fairly close to what I wanted all along.

Anyway, if you have any specific changes you need explained, I'm happy to do so! Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the info :) What is this secret jump line from Privateer? My own version of things has a new jump line from Hyades discovered that leads to one of my new sectors so hopefully thers no match there. Whats the run down on the Scylla and Charybdis types of jump lines, are they caused by the effects of a black hole or some other anomoly? Speaking of, I don't even see a Scylla on the map, mind you with that many lines going everywhich way I'm not surprised I've missed it.

Thanks again

The Eden-Rikel jump line is the one that wasn't on Johnny's original map. The line is added in Righteous Fire, but it's never actually discussed in the game... so you only know about it if you come across it randomly during the Eden missions at the end of the game.

Charybdis lines are caused by a quasar (the "Charybdis" quasar:)) - the most imporant issue is that all those blue jump lines are one way (from Dakota to somewhere else).

Scylla is... a weird... special thing... from the WC Movie. A 'gravitic anomaly' or somesuch. The Confederation Handbook implies that it may have been artificially created by the Steltek (for travelling from Vega to their Mars colony).

Well, now that i've had some time to sit and work on some sectors, I've got another quick question.

What's the story behind the Grovsner colonies and the Oasian system? Are these human inhabitted? Any particular reason why they aren't under one of the major groups?

Thanks :)

edit: The Dallas system in Avalon sector too, heh :)

The Grovsner Colonies are mentioned in the novels Fleet Action and Action Stations - they're just a minor human faction, similar to the Free Landreich Republic (they refused to accept the 2668 Armistice).

The Oasis System is from the Wing Commander Academy show - it's a neutral system, inhabited by another race (Oasians).

The Dallas System comes from Johnny's WCP Source Map. It doesn't have any sort of an explanation in-canon. It's supposedly "actually" a reference to an organization chart made famous by former Origin VP Dallas Snell - which was just an arrow going from his name back to itself.
