Making the Games: Nephilim Capital Ship Artwork (November 6, 2008)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
The bugs grow them big - today we see the Nephilim's ships of the line. The first image is Syd Mead's original 'alien capital ship' sketch - the rest are sketches and renderings done by the team at Origin. Note the file names as well, which frequently refer to the original monikers given these ships. For instance, the Barracuda is the "Skate", the Hydra is the "Marlin", the Kraken is the "Narwhal" and the Tiamat is the "Tsunami". Be careful with that last image (rendered for a magazine advertisement), too - it's a huge file!

Thanks to Captain Johnny for both archiving and providing this material!

These really bring me back to when all we knew of Prophecy was what Origin let us know and we were all making conjectures, like that picture of the wormhole gate doing something that was for so long labeled "alien ship bleeds blue into an atmosphere" or something like that.

That last picture in particular reminds me of eighth grade, buying magazines for every little glimpse I could get at the game, worrying about whether Prophecy would live up to the previous games. Good times.

Yeah... the good days. Visiting the Prophecy website, finding very information, enough to get us interested, but never enough to spoil anything.

I miss that whole approach to information. These days, you usually know everything about a game before it's released. It's terrible - unless I force myself to actually stay away from a given game's website, usually by the time it's released, I don't find anything interesting in it. I play it, and, you know - "well, yeah, this is great, but I've seen it all already."

Yeah, those were great times. a.g.w-c and #w-c bustling with life. Rumors flying. I remember the first hints about WC4 taking place on two, yeah that's right *two* carriers. But we had no idea of the context of it all.

The release of SO was an amazing time to be deep in the WC community. Every week you got something new, story to digest, missions to complete, and then the satisfaction of knowing more was coming the next week.

Back to the topic at hand, I have to say I like the final version of the Barracuda better than the sketch here. The hard lines looking very unNephilim-like.

The Tiamat is still a sight to behold. And one big SOB.

Curse my initial mistrust of the internet, I missed all that!

Though I like the Barracuda sketch here better than the final version, I think it looks more fishy.
Like spines...

The Barracuda sketch looks much better here, but the final version is more Nephilim-ship like. It's texture and form is nothing like the Nephilim ships. Other than that fact...it's pretty good.
