Making the Game - Part 20 (May 25, 2008)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Today we have another selection of emails. These are dated early July, 1996 and they cover the early development of Wing Commander Prophecy's weapons systems. Here you can see comments which lead to the creation of both the Dragonfly rocketpods and the interest in the ultimately unfinished shield-killing gun (here given to the player rather than the aliens).

Very interesting.

I especially like the idea about the Quantum Disruptor gun. It would also put an end to the question why the components are not shielded: they are and only some guns can damage then (Quantum for the fighters, Plasma for the bombers). Of course, they don't specifically say that the other guns cannot damage turrets etc. but I think it would have been very cool. Though it shouldn't be available from the beginning.

The idea about having shield/armour guns, well, ok, why not. I wasn't too thriller about it in FS but it would be something new.
Anti-Missile-Turret is still there I see but no mention of the Zero-G bomblets.

I also more thought about the swarmers than the Dragonfly when reading about the anti-bomber rocket packs.

I think it's always fit into the phase shield cycle. The components are just more sensitive than the rest of the ship, sometimes with additional shielding provided by the generators.

Yeah, that's an explanation but for me it's not entirely satisfying. I would have preferred the Quantum disruptor solution. ;)

Come on, if i fired at a 17th century cannon at a 27th century spacecraft's hull it would still feel te blow, maybe just like a sting from a bug, but it would still be a form of damage, and a thousand or tenthousandfold of that damage could/would form critical damage.
