Jumpgate Accounts

Knowing that some of you wanted to try Jumpgate and didn't get to, I'd like to announce that I've got two spare (accidental, but spare) JG acceptances to the closed Beta. The first two of you that email me and suck up enough will have one of these acceptances forwarded to them.

Once you've gotten that, you might want to join the Drakhai, at http://www.drakhai.net. It's out WC Jumpgate squad. On the main page is a form to fill out if you want to join, and I assure you it's quite a bit of fun to run around in the game spouting Kilrathi slogans that noone else can understand.

Va ka garga ka naru ha garga.

Jumpgate is starting their stress test very soon, I believe... they're looking for lots of people to play.

hey tye, I've got no idea what your address is but I'd love one of those accounts.. i'm not really good at brown nosing though :)

Pffft, you haven't been paying attention. I gave it up back in January. Death isn't bored with it, though. Since the player wipe, he's reformed the Drakhai and is maintaining them. More power to him, I say. But by god, that game wears on you. Some games like that are good. The best RPGs are, they draw you in, and you spend a lot of time on them because you get involved. But in an RPG, you can put it down and walk away almost immediately if you have to, and it ends after a time, even a months worth of steady play. But in JG, you have to keep at it, short term and long term. If you try to walk away in mid flight, for an emergency or something (which I've gotten to experience), you usually get completely killed. And after giving it up in Jan, I logged back in a month later only to find I'd become one of the weakest of the squad, in fact, in the whole game. I don't have that kind of time, sadly. But that's why I vehemently don't play UO, EQ, JG, or other mmog's like that. Not anymore, anyway. Even Black and White is cutting it close, but I do get to stop it whenever, so it's not so bad.

Hum Hades... that looks like a really *mean* cat... I mean "Kat", I apologize... ;)

Assorted comments

No, I'm not bored with the game, though I do see where there is room for improvement, before accounting for the post-release plans (3 year storyline, possibly capships, and assorted other stuff).

The FTP server is slow because of a networking problem with NetDevil's ISP that is limiting them to T-1 speeds, which is hardly sufficient for the 10,000 players they're looking to let into the game for the "stress test". Also, the FTP server is also the web server, including the UBB posting boards and their hit on the server processor(s) from the CGI stuff.

They have, though, added another FTP server (ftp2.netdevil.com), on a different pipe, and from all available reports the download speed is improved significantly from a few days earlier.

NetDevil is admitting a bunch of players in, with those who've previously applied having first crack at making accounts. Feel free to stop by their Recruitment Center and submit a request to be added. If you make it, they'll e-mail you with the details on how to get an account and so forth. (note: If you use a free e-mail provider like Hotmail or Yahoo, either disable their "bulk e-mail" filter, or add netdevil.com to the "bypass filters" list [or whatever they call it], as the message will otherwise get filtered out before you can read it)

its still amazingly slow for me.. i'm trying to download an 80 meg file at under 1kbps.. its gonna take me more than 60 hours apparently

Well thats pretty good WildCat, mine was averaging at about 0.5KB/s. I'm resuming now though and it is much better at 2.8KB/s, only 6 hours now :(

Why would you need to cancel a jumpgate account? They don't cost money, they don't generate volumes of e-mail... just don't use it <G>
