Ok, after 2 hours scouring wcnews.com and this site for general advice on joystick issues for WC3, I find... nothing. So, a new thread: General advice on what to use to play WC1, 2, 3, and 4 with the new breed of digital joysticks.

WC3 won't run with a digital joystick. I played it years ago with my analog stick (CH flightstick) and had a blast. Now I want to make it run under win98 for my kid. I got it to run fine, except when it comes time to fly--then I have no joystick.

I've read that the game doesn't support digital sticks. I find it hard to believe that an analog sitck would input different data to the game port than a digital, but if so, what's the best work around? The machine I chose is older, and has support for legacy sound, etc., so the game runs well on it, but the machine is not fast enough to use Dosbox. I'm trying to find an analog stick, but that's proving very difficult. Is there any way to use a digital stick w/o using dosbox?

I've searched the web for advice on digital vs. analog sticks and the games that need analog, without finding any good generic advice. I'm hoping someone here can supply what a person needs to know to play wc3 with a digital stick. Please advise!

Best Regards,

Paul

Paul, I guess it's much easier to pick up an analog joystick on eBay than tinkering around with getting a digital one to work, but here we go.

What kind of joystick do you use? Maybe there is someone who's got the same model and can help.

Does the machine have a game port, or are you trying to run the stick over USB?

Have you tried an emulator? It may be a silly thought, but setting the game to keyboard mode and teaching the joystick to send the keyboard commands should be relatively easy. If your stick doesn't support that, you can use a freeware emulator like JoyEmu and try your luck.

Yeah, the Kilrathi Saga WC3 works with a wider range of joysticks, but in this case it sounds like it'd be better to pick up an old one from eBay for $10-20.
