Is Wing Commander 3 worth buying on GoG if I already own it on 3DO?

Absolutely, EVERY mission in Wing Commander III 3DO is different. The entier game was remade to better suit the console; the mechanics were redone so it was more 'arcade': it's easier to shoot down enemy ships and so there are a lot more of them. The PC version is a different experience, with fewer fighters/capital ships that are harder to kill.

But the missions are just /different/ and playing the one you haven't is like getting fifty more Wing Commander battles you haven't seen before. My favorite example is the Tamayo scramble mission. In the original PC release you defend the Victory against four waves of bombers... and in the 3DO port you defend it against an enemy destroyer and her escort fighters!

The PC version also looks much better. The 3DO port had its own engine that looks sort of like a cross between Wing Commander II and Wing Commander III VGA. The PC's SVGA mode is much, much sharper.

That does it, I'm searching hell and highground to finally experience 3DO WC3. I'd be less of a fan if I didn't. The arcade style and brisky engine sounds sweet.

The 3do version is surprisingly cheap still on ebay for a mint and complete one.

I'm so excited, just started bidding on my first ever 3DO. If that Tamayo mission is half as entertaining as it sounds, all my Christmases have come early.

I'll be sure to write a YouTube review.

The trick is to try and get a 3DO flight stick; that makes flying in the 3DO version as seamless as the PC...

Wow, the coloured VDUs and hearing a Kilrathi pronounce my wingman is dead has me itching to try this out.

Great vid report, thank you for sharing! 2 days left!

Hmmm, no flight stick on ebay UK - can see a relatively cheap one in the US.

There are a surprising number of sticks on eBay right now. It is ABSOLUTELY worth the $60-$80 they're going for at the moment. It's not just a strangely shaped controller like earlier consoles had... Wing Commander III is specifically designed to take advantage of it and it's so much cleaner than the ordinary scheme.

I am going for one of them. Hopefully he takes one of my offers. If I win I'll report back with my impressions of it and maybe some video.

Yay! I won a 3DO Flightstick Pro for an offer I made of $53! Not a bad price if you ask me.

As soon as it arrives I am gonna be taking some full mission game play videos of both Super Wing Commander and Wing Commander 3 and putting them up on my YT. There seems to be a serious lack of direct capture 3do videos of these games. I will make sure to link them here once they are up. I am super excited.

Congratulations! I can't wait to hear what you think and to see those videos!

Thanks for the heads up! I remember looking for one a few months ago and there was only like one overpriced auction. I've wanted the 3DO flight stick since back in the day when WC3 first came out on 3DO.

I will try to do a review of the flight stick along with hopefully a full play through of SWC and WC3...but we'll see if I actually devote that much time to it. I will post a few missions of game play at least

Rad! Try and do one of the ground mission replacements (you can jump to them with the cheat code); folks here would be interested in seeing the Kilrathi gun platforms!

Hah I remember those things. All my memories of WC3 come from the 3DO version since i've been playing it ever since I was still a kid back in 1996...so unlike you guys...i never experienced the real ground missions. Those gun platforms were all i knew!

I always thought it was funny how the gun platforms were as small as a regular fighter but they would explode in a capital ship style with the blinding white flash and all.

I remember back then I knew about the pc version having ground based missions and feeling sooo jealous of pc players because all I had was an NES and 3DO back then so that was the only way I could play the game.

I still need to buy WC3 on GOG so i can finally experience the pc version missions.

Just arrived! Time for some fun, and videos coming soonish. :D Isn't that a beautiful sight?

I think I remember reading somewhere that the video quality between the PSX and the 3DO were near identical or identical but that the audio was different. It said that the PSX was stereo and the the 3DO was surround sound. It that true?

I'm not sure exactly on this... And we haven't entirely ruled out that the 3DO version may have better quality video than the PSX version or not. They benefited from the same re-compressing that origin did specifically for the 3DO.. So they're both cleaner looking than the PC version, The PSX version for sure has better color depth than the PC version and likely the 3DO version does too but we haven't entirely finished breaking down the 3DO decoder. The PSX does use some wierd compression that makes reds really blocky. Its actually harder to read the text than in the PC version even though it looks better over all.

As far as sound, the PSX version is stereo in the intro only and mono in most other videos. WC4 PSX is stereo throughout (and stereo is all you really need to also include surround). It's a little early to tell for the 3DO version. The main difference between the PSX and 3DO versions are the gameplay though. With the exception of ground missions missing, the PSX version is very much like the PC version whereas the 3DO version's gameplay is very different.

Ripping the 3do wc3 vids is easy. Linux has a driver for opening the cds and the 3do wc3 movie format is fully documented.

Not exactly. You can easily copy the files to your harddrive but have fun actually playing them. They're designed to make use of the 3DO hardware for playback. While similar in format to the PC WC3 codec, it just isn't the same enough. The "documentation" you speak of isn't as full as you suggest though it's only a matter of time before a player does support this, it's just not quite there yet. The FourDO emulator guys have worked out some playback issues but more in relation to playback within the game as opposed to playing the files outside of the game.

Close, 3DO was stereo and ps1 was MONO. Ewwwwwwww.

What, you guys can't play 3DO games on your PCs?

(Come on, let me be unnecessarily happy just this once. :))
