Initial reaction to WC movie in '99

I could never get over the fact that Malcolm McDowell was missing from the movie. IMO he's the only actor out there suitable for the Tolwyn part. That, and the stuff about pilgrims, is why I was disappointed with the movie.

I was a horrible WC fan back in '99. I went to the theatre intending to see it and instead saw October Sky :(

After I first saw the movie several years later, I thought it didn't deserve a lot of the vitriol it warrented; of course, I knew pretty much what to expect by then.

I know there's one kitty out there who's making a WC4 movie by stringing game scenes together.... PLEASE hurry up so we can forget that 1999 thing.

It was a decent space movie and I liked the retro atmosphere, it's just that I spent the whole movie trying to figure out what it had to do with Wing Commander.

Patience...:) It is a little more complicated than just stringing together... Plus summer is busy here :)

I was dissapointed too back then,I also took 7 friends with me,I forced them to come and see Wc,they knew what Wc meant to me and they did my favor.

After the movie finished I was so angry and dissapointed and I also had my friends making fan of the movie and laughing. It was hottible.

Nowdays I own the DVD and Im watching it often. It doesnt seem dissapointing anymore. Its not that Iam used to it now,its that I was an idiot back then not liking it.

P.S. Also about Hunter`s name maybe in the Dogtags write the Callsign as well so Maniac sarcastic said "Hey LT.HUNTER" , "Mr Baron Admin Bandit"

I was glad they were making a Wing Commander movie. I saw it and then spent the next several years studying physics in the hopes of inventing a time machine so that I could go back in time and shoot myself in the face before I could see it. But then I realized that if I killed myself in the past, I could never invent the time machine in the future to use to go back and kill myself. After years of intense thearpy I came to accept that I had seen the movie and nothing could be done about that.

;)

Luckily, no one on the internet will remember you or care what you said, so I doubt there will be a time flux or temporal causality loop or anything.

The movie was... ok.

Nothing great, nothing glamorous, Manianc was still an ass as usual. I was expecting a movie to follow in the footsteps of the game, instead it followed its own path.

So it was a unrewarding for me, but any viewers who didn't know anything about the games were better off than me.

I actually saw the movie just a week ago for the first time when it was on TV here. Not nearly as bad as I expected, but nothing great either. The Kilrathi worked well as long as they were shown just as dark silhouettes. Try as I might, I can't get over how weird the Rapiers looked. While I am not too keen on Prinze Jr., he did a decent job, but then again his character wasn't all that deep either. The Wing Commander games were reknown for their plot and characters. However, Blair was always the blandest one. I do agree that the movie kinda lagged after the big battle. Left me a feeling of 'was that it?' And Paladin was what, French? And excluding Iceman was a crime!

Your attempt to insult me in the context of my own joke is commendable, but as I'm sure you know, the Grandfather Paradox does not depend on the fame (or lack thereof) of the subject. I have seen the movie and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Seriously though, your avatar brings to mind a similar thing - the Masters of the Universe movie. Both movies are quite different from their source material and both are considered by most people to be horrible movies, or at least below average. But I love Masters of the Unverise. Maybe it's because it's just a better movie, and underrated too, or maybe it's because it came out when I was very young and would have loved anything with He-Man in it. So perhaps I would have loved the Wing Commander movie if I had been born 15 years later. Though the Wing Commander movie seemed like it was aiming for an older audience than the Masters of the Universe movie.

There are actually a lot of similarities between the two movies, like a combination of great and horrible cast, for example.

You have little doubt from me that your parents said something in that vein about you upon your birth.

With the exception of the production being undercut by Globus into forcing the screenwriters to shoot most of the show "on Earth", the movie is awfully close to the TV show. The one thing that was switched around was obviously Orko for Gwildor but thats about it. I'd much rather have Billy Barty than some floating sorcerer anyway.

The only good casting in MotU was Frank Langella. Everyone else - from a Friend's Star to an Admiral's wayward son to a Russian Boxer and Scott Bakula's wife - are pretty awful.

Good one

I don't remember He-Man shooting stormtroopers with laser guns in the show. Also, he's apparently not Prince Adam in the movie. And Cringer/Battlecat isn't even present (probably for the best). The entire feel of Eternia was different (though we didn't see too much of it in the film). There were new, different villans under Skeletor's command. The visual feel of the film did not resemble the cartoon in any way. So aside from some characters having the same names and some of the relationships being retained, there isn't too much in the movie that resembles the cartoon at all.

Yes, but Billy Barty and James Tolkan were both great.

I enjoyed the movie. It only loosely seemed like Wing Commander to me. This is probably since I was use to the Wing Commander 3 era. The style of the movie seems like Star Wars meets MTV style kiddie porn (the kind of garbage they've shown since not focusing on music) set in the Wing Commander Universe. I liked that it did have some dogfights and capship action, which is more than alot of sci-fi space movies. I would buy the DVD if I ever came across it.

it's been a long time since i have seen it... and it really wasn't the worst movie ever... i think most fan were just so used to the clips from the games that this was too different...

yes it could have been a lot better but the lack of budget didn't help...

i was a little disappointed but defended it anyway,David Arnold's music saved the movie IMO.
Yeah, the soundtrack is awesome. It is as good or better than many others from more popular Sci-Fi films. It might be my favorite thing about the WC movie.

Eh, disliking Uwe Boll movies is "hip" for the moment. While, yes, they are terrible - theres far, far worse than that. Robot Monster, Robot Holocaust and Phase 4 all come to mind.
