Yes, these do have "real" night vision. They came with the Prestige edition of the game, which is sold out everywhere.
They are not the military style passive light amplifiers and phosphor screens, these are more of the typical consumer style night mode you find in a camcorder. The camera sensor is sensitive to IR light, and it picks up IR. The ring around the camera contain IR LEDs, and are effectively an IR flashlight. The IR bounces off of things on the scene and the camera detects it.
For a cheap toy, they work *great*. These are actually manufactured by Jakks Pacific, and last year, they made the first version of these goggles - called the Eye Clops.

The one that comes with MW2 is the 2nd generation model, and you should be able to find it in toy stores now, for around $60. It won't have the same shape, but it's the same inside.
The 2nd gen one has two screens (first gen was one screen, so the image was only in one eye), but it's still monocular vision.

So for those of us not able to get one, head down to your local toy store now to pick it up. It's not "true" night vision, but hell, you can see in the dark!
