Hornet's guns

So for Christmas, my immoral computer savvy buddy gives me a machine containing pirated copies of every single game ever made for the old Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Master system, Genesis, and Atari 2600. Of course being a true WC fan, before exploring the literally thousands of old console games, I first go straight to the Super Nintendo Wing Commander where I find my trusty hornet firing what seems to be blue neutron bolts instead of lasers. Did the console WC have upgraded ships similar to Standoff, or did they simply take liberties with the colors?

Anyway, while I'm on the subject, I was amazed to find some absolutely unbelievably offensive games like "Custer's Revenge" for the Atari. Good Lord! You're a turgid cowboy trying to rape an Indian squaw while dodging hostile arrows! How did they ever get away with such a thing?

Somehow that sounds like the type of game you'd find in a snuff store.

Snuff movies don't exist. And if they did, McGruff would be tied to the chair.

That's just what the gun looks like in the SNES version. The SNES port uses some lesser number of colors than the VGA PC version -- 16 or 24 or so.

Different ports had random changes. One port of Wc1 was in 16 colors, and the Jalthi sprite was replaced with the Salthi sprite, only green. Weird.

That was also the SNES port. Both things are due to the technical limitations of the SNES -- they had to shave off graphics wherever they could to fit the game onto a cartridge.

Keep it up and I'll let everyone know about you and Beastman.

I think if you were to inform everyone about myself and Beastman, you'd also be telling me about it because I have no goddamned clue what you're talking about.

I still can't get into SNES WC controls... I got too used to a joystick, keyboard and 256 colors.

Back when I was much younger, my uncle and aunt were building a new house, and the whole family would gather to help. Being... some age much younger than I am now (I honestly forget), I was not much help for building, so I would bring my SNES.

I remember playing through Wing Commander SNES those days, and I remember how ecstatic I was when I finally beat it.

One thing that always bugged me was how the other pilots' killboard scores were never saved by your password. Everytime you restored a game from password, the other pilots' kills were reset to their game start default values. So, after a few continues, it was very typical to see your own callsign at the top of the killboard.

Now, that is really bizarre! I wonder how it got away back then. If it was made and sold, it would cause an uproar. Atari had some huge flops like ET. I also remember they made Garfield.

Eh, it was certainly controversial in 1982 -- it's one of the early video game issues that prompted Nintendo to be notoriously picky about who could and could not release games for their consoles when they entered the market... which is something that continues to have an effect on their reputation today.

Custer's Revenge wasn't made *by* Atari, it was made *for* the Atari 2600 -- the company that developed it was called Mystique.

Score one for emulators, re: WC SNES -- you can just save your state and continue with all the kills intact...

No, I think he'd be telling us all more then we needed to know ;)
