Hi everyone!

Thorne

Spaceman
Hi,

I'm new here. Just wanted to say hi and briefly introduce myself. I've been playing Wing Commander since 1991 when I first started with WCII. I took a long break from the game after finishing WCP, and just recently installed it again because I missed playing the game. I still think WCP is the best game ever developed, and I'm glad there are still a lot of WC addicts out there like me.

Now, if only the game would run without crashing during missions I would be the happiest person in the world.

Welcome aboard! :)

You like WCP best from the series? It sure is fun to play but nothing can beat the original WC1 or even WC2, IMHO.

Yes, I too find Wing Commander 3 to be the best of the bunch. It's actually what got me hooked onto the Wing Commander series (back in the ol' 3DO heyday)!

If I were to make a list, it would be:

WC3
WC1
WC4
WCArmada
WCP

I never ever played WC2 (which will soon change, I purchased it off eBay), so I can't judge.

Well....

To be honest, I never played WCIII or WCIV (don't shoot me!) I went from WCII to WCP. I would love to try them out, but I think I missed the boat as far as buying one of these games at a local store. eBay is the only way to go for these games right now, and believe me, I am trying to get them at a reasonable price.

Will WCIII and WCIV run under Windows 2000 Pro? I am having issues getting WCP to run under Win2k, and I'm considering setting up an old box with Windows 98 just so I can play these older games (including such awesome games as MOOII =)

Oh, and I had WCII on original 5 and 1/2 floppies! lol. I remember it took somewhere around 3 to 4 hours to install (well, at least the anticipation of my first computer game ever (we bought the game with our 386,) it seemed like that long,) but it was worth the wait. It was a great game. Somehow the box and the floppies got lost and I had to buy the "Calssics" CD-ROM version, just so I could say I still owned it =)

Ah well.

Sorry...

I have no technical knowledge of Wing Commander compatibility with different versions of Windows. Thanks for asking, though because now I'll get to hear the answer too :D

This way here, I can know what I have to do to run WC2...!

Let me formally introduce myself, Thorne! I'm Col.Dom, the self-proclaimed real-life Maniac of this forum. Previous "run-ins with the law," and occasional disagreements due to my sparkling repartee have proved my claim thus far.

So, in Maniac fashion I say "stick with me. I'll show you everything you need to know."

Hahaha! :D

I'd have to say that my all-time favorite is WC 1, but after recently playing WC4, I'm not so sure. Still, I'd rank 'em...

WC1
WC4
WC2
WCP
WCso
WC3

can't run Academy, Armada or Privateer on my PC :(

You say you're having trouble with WCP? It used to crash all the time with me, too, but I found out that that was because I had a VooDoo 2 and needed the patch.

No voodoo... my system is composed of the following components:

AMD Duron 950Mhz
256KB RAM
Diamond Viper v770 Ultra (TNT2, using nVidia latest drivers)
Win2K Pro
Have not downloaded DirectX 8.1 yet (I think I'm still using 8.0a)

I installed the Win2K patch (god bless whoever wrote this patch!)

If I figure out a solution to my problems with this OS, I will definitely post them. In the mean time, if anyone already has the solution, I'd appreciate the hel. =)

oooh, niiiice!

Well, I know that WCP will definitely not run right with a VooDoo 2 without its patch. The earlier ones... now that's a different story! I just installed WC4 in Win98 and it worked fine with its patch. Sorry, I don't know about Win2K!:(

Win98 and all WC Games

I have Win98 and a VooDoo4 (hopefully getting a GeForce something soon). Is this going to affect running my old Wing Commander games (WC1, WC3, WC4, Prophecy Gold and soon-to-be-receiving WC2)??

If it is, what patches need I get...?

WC4 (can't beat the story)
Priv1 (replay value almost puts this over WC4, but graphics are getting painful <sigh>)
WC2
WC1
Priv2
Armada
Academy

In the land of the addons, since I'm too lazy to try to order all of them together :)
RF (by far the best, the story was better than Priv's)
Secret Ops (it was free and had nice back ground story, albeit not in the game)
SO2 (Jazz nuke and the Morningstar, need I say more?)
SM1
SO1
SM2

Another Quick Question

Where am I going to find all the add-ons (SM1 & 2, SO1 & 2) for WCs 1 & 2??

Well, they are pretty small... does anyone have 'em who'd graciously send them over via email...?

:)

Col.Dom,

A new graphics card *shouldn't* affect how or if your WC games run. Do you have the Kilrathi Saga or are you using the originals?

Actually the files section of the CIC has them, if you have the KS version of the game. Origin has them at their site as well. At least they did. The CIC link is here

If you have the original versions of the games, which based on your comment that you have WC1 but are awaiting WC2, they are not avaiable for free. If you are getting the Special edition of WC2, that comes with the SOs and the speech pack, iirc. I imagine you can find them for purchase somewhere.

Cool

Yes, I have the original versions of the games. Pretty outdated. I would get Kilrathi Saga, if the going prices weren't anywhere from $150.00 to $300.00! So, I'll stick with my original stuff. Crud! I think I need the speech pack too....

OLSKOO

Whoa, I was going to post my own list, but you just did that for me, Shane! :)
The only changes I'd make to this list would be putting P1 (two words: replay value!) before WC4 and SO2 before Secret Ops (I don't think any online fiction can match SO2's story... I mean, it had Jazz, Minx, Morningstars, Ayer's rock, Paladin and Maniac... whoa! ).
