Gemini Gold Gets Overhauled (November 15, 2005)

Cpl Hades

Mr. Kat
Gemini Gold has received its first upgrade since the project's initial release back in July. After a month of beta testing, the team has deemed the highly anticipated update ready for public consumption. Gemini Gold is a project that takes the fan made Privateer Remake game and makes it more like Privateer. A large part of the Gemini Gold 1.01 patch is designed to fix bugs, but there are some changes to more closely match the original game's settings and add some fun new technical improvements.
  • High Quality textures for the Tarsus
  • Planets with clouds, Space Stations have lightmaps
  • Adds high-res explosion animations
  • Uses Wing Commander style missile lock animation
  • Sets the ships' starting speed to ~150kps
  • Bases and planets now have an automatic landing zones

The complete list of changes can be found on the Gemini Gold site's news page. Currently only the 16MB Windows version of the patch is available, but the Linux and MacOS version are due soon.

Privateer always was and still is my favorite game ever made. I would cringe to know the ammount of my life spent infront of any one of the four ships in the game. It had a feel that Freelancer and every other "space trader" game could never accomplish. I played version 1og Gold Remake but found it lacking that spark that I remembered loving in Privateer, but I can't deny the effort was there. I think the biggest turnoff for me were the seperate screens for buying and selling things, and not being able to do it from the original prompt.

Either way, I will continue to keep trying each patch, every time hoping for Privateer in that graphical update I've always yearned for =)

We were not able to change the base interfaces, it's a limitation of the vegastrike engine we are using but someone is currently working on it and i'm confident to have this feature available in the near future which includes also the Quine :)

Good to hear! I love the fact that the whole gemini gold team is trying to hard to recreate the game in every possible way-- it really is awesome to see such dedication to a great game. Thanks for all the hard work =)

I really hope that gets done soon :). I also tried GG a few weeks (months?) ago, and I simply couldn't get past the base interface. I hated that tree-based shopping system, it simply had nothing to do with Privateer.
