Gameplay question for WC1

Sorry, I didn't mean that I don't believe what you stated. I just found it unbelievable that Origin was phoned because of that - I always thought that back in 1990 people were used to try out and read manuals before phoning a company.

HEHE, I guess you weren't quite right... I never had that issue, I just tried to land like you would in real life... it was a nice surprise when the autopilot landed my ship

As for the comms, it was always the first thing to go, but somehow it didn't bug me for the landings...

It's a shame that it wasn't used in WCP/SO... but in the bright side, WC Saga does something similar to the WC3 landings…

People weren't much different, and they didn't have an internet to turn to to ask questions like this. There's a lot of material included with WC1 too. It's easy to go through it all and not grasp most of the commands.

Space sims went downhill after they got rid of the WC1/WC2 interface. :) Nothing was scarier to me than being in the middle of a huge dogfight and knowing that the last missile had -destroyed- my ejection system, yelling at the "Eject" alarm to shut the hell up because you know you can't eject anyway, watching in horror as you feel yourself take a hit and seeing the cockpit explode in front of you, your wingman is dead, and yet somehow through it all you manage to limp your way back home out of fuel and running on fumes, and the LSO says "Glad to see you made it back alive!".

I'm not sure if it's actually modeled in the game, but my impression was that the Sabre's targeting system would be blown to bits if the ship got hit too often in the front, what would usually happening if we were facing ships with turrets on strike missions, what render this type of mission impossible to win, even if the rest of the ship was OK.

So we had to be extra careful in those, because even moderate damage could prevent us from accomplishing mission objectives.

I found the target track was the first thing to go on WC1 & 2. Normally it's annoying not being able to lock a target, but I remember being amused when that happened fighting Strakhas, because it doesn't really matter then, heh.

To this day, I keep Claw Marks handy on my bookshelf, not in the WC1 box. :)

Actually Accel Absorbers go even before the Target track in most cases,

I always liked the enemy damage display from wc 1/2. It was still ok in 3/4 but they ruined it completely in prophecy. Both target damage display and your ships dd...

And designs of ships were better back then. Ok, prophecy had some nice ships... :)
And the use of missiles throughout the franchise went from useful, to deadly to almost useless in prophecy...

Ditto.

I found they were waaaay more effective in WC1 to WC2. After that, it was sort of a spiral downwards until you had to be practically sitting in an enemy's cockpit before you could be fairly sure of a successful missile hit. Bloody decoys... :(

Just going back to the original issue about landing, am I right in thinking that in WC2 you don't have to line up with the landing bay on the Concordia? Cos I always did anyway...

That's right, you didn't have to in WC2.

I will still never forget in WC 1 facing two Gratha in a Rapier with:
1 Laser Cannon
1 Neutron Cannon
no shields
no armour
No main engines
No Afterburners?
a whole lot of other busted up systems too.

And I still got one. then I took a hit from the Gratha's laser cannons and it took out my laser.
Just imagine trying to retreat to autopilot distance in that wreck!

Good times though!

My first space sim was Elite, so it was just natural to me to have to fly towards the hanger to dock.

I ALWAYS land manually in WC3/4.
It's a lot more fun. And it was pretty cool, entering the deck.
They're the best games, "landing-wise".

Besides, what could possibly be more fun than flying through the carrier in WC4 on full afterburners, knowing that the slightest mistake will kill you? ;)

How about the same move.....in reverse? :)

The automated landing zones in Priv can be a pain in the ass. I'm not sure how many times I've landed in the middle of a fight on accident.

Tell me about it.

That was specially bad when you were in the middle of a patrol or assassination mission.

I used to always roll through 180 degrees to land on the Victory on WC3 because you always seem to approach 'upside down'... then after seeing the movie, I started landing Maniac and Rosie style. :)

You have to be careful on the mission where you go off to rescue Flint, because if you cruise inside the Victory at 100kps while Eisen is talking to you, he gets cut off mid sentence and you'll instantly land before having a chance to say you're going after her. That got me the first time I played. And then you've got to swap to CD 2 just to get to the point where you can reload, then put CD 1 back in again... argh! :(
