Well, I kinda do . I do genuinely think Chris Roberts has stuck pretty close to the original pitch. Granted, there are many things that are much more detailed than the original pitch indicated - but then again, the original pitch doesn't spell out point by point how each feature will look. It would be a different story if we were comparing the current project with some sort of full design document - then we'd undoubtedly see massive differences. But his pitch was basically, for a complete universe with complete freedom to do anything - there's a lot of room for expansion in that statement without going off pitch.
There's levels to this. You're right that maybe he said on day one that he wanted to build the open-universe do-anything game that he wanted to play, and that was true then and now. But other people also have a point regarding the real out there stuff. A key example is the Animoji head tracking Face Over IP. Why would anyone build that? It's a gimmick of a feature if your main product was a communications app. It's excessive as a side feature in your space sim. I started to type out several lines about why this is a bad idea, but I just shouldn't even have to do that. Same for biker gangs. Did you know they're adding player character swimming next?
