Fleets

What do we know in the way of Fleet protocol in Wing Commander? Formations, Deployments, etc.

If you had to make a generic WC capital ship group, based around a CVE "Jeep Carrier", what would be the capital ship support and what would be the fighter strength?

Ok well a WVE carriers I believe 40 fighters (30?) anyway I would have (this is WC2/ER/FA era) 1 (2)squad of ferrets. 1 squad fighter sabers 1 squad bomber sabers. For capship support, I would have 1 lt. cruiser, 1-2 destroyers, 1-3 corvettes.

Second-star admirals command Fleets. Admiral Petranova commanded the 3rd Fleet at the time of WC4, Admiral Terell the 10th Fleet.

Admiral Terrell did *not* command the tenth fleet -- the tenth fleet is never mentioned.

The CVEs carried a squadron of Rapier-C's, a squadron of Sabre-D's and a squadron of Ferrets. (15 fighters each).

At most, a CVE would be part of a Task Force, *not* the center of a fleet.

So, a CVE and escorts would...patrol a border pretty much?

At the beginning of Fleet Action, you see the Tarawa as a part of the Concordia Task Force. This is why they are referred to as Escort Carriers. They are used as Fleet Carrier Escorts, large convoy escorts and as the center of a Garrison Fleet.

OK, since everyone is giving me the answers to questions I'm asking, but not answering the questions I mean, I'll give you a scenario.

Fleet wants to sneak as small a task force as possible into Kilrathi Space. It would have to include one "carrier" -- what ever the smallest capital ship, modified or otherwise, is that can carry...a squardon or two.

I'm looking for a task force of reletively small capital ship craft, including transports.

I have the perfect "fleet" for you my good sir! The TCS Tarawa, a CVE described earlier by LOAF sneeked into Kilrathi space with a cover of a single corvette and a cruiser!

*Of course, they weren't expected to make it back, and if not some good luck they would have been wasted by the Kilrathi. So that's not exactly a great fleet.:)

I'm well aware of the Tarawa...I've read all the WC novels many times over...but I want something that sounds more realistic, compared to Forstchen's "Send a boat out alone in the fashion of 'Where Eagles Dare'"...

Something that sounds more realistic...less suicidal or fantastic...

I'm looking at the WC2-3 era right now...though I'll need to know about 4's standpoint as well...

Well, if I were to create a task force around a CVE, I would stick a Sheffield Destroyer and a Corvette with it.

I would personally build it around a Confederation class dreadnaught. It can carry a good number of fighters and is capable of defending itself.

1 or 2 of the WC3 destroyers. They have a very large armor advantage over the WC2 Gilgamesh.

Probably 1 Waterloo cruiser. They've got a fighter compliment of 40, which would add to your basic staying power.

Then round it out with a couple of frigates... and any specialty craft you need (for listening equipment... or troop transport or the like)

I'm just making this up as something general... a medium sized battle group... If you want something slightly larger add a cruiser and maybe a couple more destroyers...

If it's for some sort of specific mission, the makeup of the group would obviously change.

Ah, finally! Answers that I was seeking!

Do we have a picture of a Waterloo cruiser kicking around on the CIC?

Many moons of thanks!

I'm going to have to get the logistics of all this down now...

I also have a question about the WC Prophecy Map. Is there any systems on that map that aren't known of during WC2-3?
Hard question, yes, but I'm trying for continuity here...

Uh... yeah... there are...

All kinds of places inside Kilrathi space weren't known... nor were the ones we found in Gemini... there are also a bunch that we probably don't know about that were discovered (and probably some we do know about that I don't remember)
