First Person Shooters

212 Squadron - "The Old Man's Eyes And Ears"
Know what I'm really getting tired of? World War II FPS games. I mean, I really love the first three Medal Of Honor games but since then they've been on a very sudden nosedive in terms of anything likeable.

I really want to say I like or can get into Brother In Arms because it looks great and sounds great and is written really well, but I can't seem to get the whole strategy thing working still. Admittedly, I'm pretty early in the game, I think but the whole "WWII Shooter" thing has finally run its course with me.

And then theres this whole "Half-Life" thing. I never understood why everyone made a stink about HL, much like I don't understand why people made a stink about Halo. They're polished, nicely made games, sure - but thats it. A lot of games have followed suit with these FPS games with scripted in-game moments - I'm currently in the middle of FarCry - and its neat and all, but I don't think I've loved a FPS since Duke Nukem 3D.

Anyone have any thoughts?

i think the one reason why people like WWII games like metal of honor is because it was the last war that "everyone" stood behind. also, with halo it's a fun game only if you have xbox live and the trash talking that goes around with it. well, that's just my opinion.

Having played Medal of Honor and Brother of Arms...here's my thoughts. Medal of Honor was a good game but the absence of an interesting plot and character development made me lose interest somewhere around 3/4 into the game. Brothers in Arms was a little better in the plot respect and the neat way of involving tanks and strategy was a nice touch...regardless I lost interest about 1/2 of the way through that game. The only current WW2 FPS game that has held my interest thus far has been RTCW. Granted, RTCW stretches the truth a great deal but at least it was interesting enough to finish. I think there is a way to do a WW2 game that makes it interesting and involving but the latest ones just aren't it.

Except for Wolf3D, I never started playing WW2 FPS games to begin with. Ghost Recon's about the old war FPS I'll play. Other than that, Serious Sam, Doom 3 and Halo are the only ones I could get into, and I liked those a whole lot.

Does Battle Field count as First Person Shooter? I rarely do multiplayer since I only have time to jump into public game and those tend to suck. I find the War War Two stuff still fun. I guess it's nostalgia for the era, and like soemone said above the last "good fight" we had. I never played the games Chris mentioned. Mulitplayer games aside I would say Quake 2 was the last FPS shooter I really got into. That was one of the only game were I would actually get scared, yes scared, at least a couple of times. The sounds were what really did it for me. Then when Quake 3 came out I just found it not really better than Quake 2. I did enjoy Nuke Dukem 3d but I find it does not hold up well over time, well going into the porno booth is still fun.

Sometimes, however, I just get jaded on all video games. You guys understand, nothing quite like an interactive movie with real actors mixed in with cutting edge space simulator. I've said this before but will say it again. The WC game (mainly 3 onward) remind me of the golden age of movies. The old movies were so huge and epic, employed thousands of actors. Then movie companies started to get extra stingy. It took until LOTR (and the technology developed over time) to get back to the epic type movies with 1,000's of characters. WC is sort fo the same way. MAde during that sweet era when the industry was all about "mulit-media" and "interactive movies". Ironically since then the gaming industry has given up this idea and we no longer see anything even close to Wing Comander. We might not ever see real actors again. Like the movie industry, when the technology gets cheap enough for the gaming industry we might see something like WC again, but this time with virtual actors.

Oh I digressed, sorry.

Half-life, heh.. I have to admit i'm a Sci-Fi fan anyway, but i think what really got people with halflife was things like using brains instead of just bigger guns and the fact the world seemed real and independant (things happening around you that could neither affect nor reach to you), NPC's that seemed believable (the marine running round the corner, sees me waiting with a shotgun and runs back to cover and waits for me instead, even bouncing a grenade off the wall and round the bend), even if a lot of things were scripted, they still resulted in an active story - up till then FPS games had consisted of kill it, move, kill it again. HL reinvented the FPS formula. Just like Dune2 will always be remebered as the grandaddy RTS, games like that will always grab a lot of people. Anything different enough to be new will always have fans..

I never got into HL really either (although I did find it fun at the time). However, I really enjoyed Half-life 2. It doesnt particularly innovate in the scripted-linear FPS sense. But if you like farcry's graphics, you'll love the way HL2 looks. Plus the tension mounts from the get go and never really slows untill the game is over. and the physics engine is really cool. Picking up and tossing just about anything you can carry is neat in the way each thing reacts different when thrown. Some puzzles are even built around this Idea. Shoving things aroung with the gravity gun is a lot of fun. The Crane segment was a blast... Dropping Boxcars on Combine Soldiers :D

Other than that... Deus Ex is great... but in some senses it's not exactly a FPS. You can even finish it without killing a single thing.

I'm an old adventure gamer (and WCer) at heart though. Give me an old space quest title anyday!
