Finally I've destroyed Supply Depot...

What the hell....why missions in SM1 are so hard? I've tried many times to complete Bifrost 2, and finally, today I've did it. And yes, Paladin survived. He was forced to return to base, but not by me though. The supply depot was really tough to destroy. I've got almost heart attack - approximately I had pulse 200 or more...
The unnecessary element is praying. Really...
Now I can't decide, what mission is harder - Ralari's defend (Kurasawa 2) or destroying Supply Depot (Bifrost 2). My God I hope there's no harder mission in all WC games than BiFrost 2...please, never more...

I'm going to say Kurasawa's Ralari escort is tougher, or at least more frustrating given that each time you try again you have to manually fly from the asteroids to the rendezvous Nav. Then its pot luck as to where the Gratha spawn, sometimes they'll be easier to kill quickly, sometimes they won't.

You probably won't thank me for saying this, but on the supply depot mission, IIRC you can head straight to the Depot from launch, ignoring the fighters and unloading on the target. If you wind up battered and with no missiles/broken guns, you can also circle the depot repeatedly while the Kilrathi cap fighters plug firepower at you. I think eventually they will accidentally blow up their own base. :)

The expansion packs are notoriously hard but no worse for it given how rewarding it is to beat them. Just wait until you get to SO1...

Given that history, I wonder how awesome the first expansion pack to Squadron 42 will be. Here's to hoping they keep the SM/SO/RF tradition!

Yeah, I'd agree with -danr- that the hardest mission in all of Wing Commander is in SO1 - though it's debatable, Kurasawa-2 is definitely the hardest if you do the mission the normal way using the autopilot, and there's missions in Special Operations which are fairly close to impossible if you play them on Nightmare (my recollection is that the Shy Meadows usually lasts about 30 seconds, for example, which is about as long as it takes your Wasp's booster pack to accelerate you into weapons range of the bombers). However, since WC1 and 2 lack configurable difficulty levels, I tend to think that the difficulty of later games should be compared to the earlier ones with the games set to default (Ace) difficulty.

Pulling a Maniac, eh?

Hmm... how did this happen? A Wing Commander thread in the off-topic forum? Gotta do something about that.

I think the Gwenhyvar is the toughest mission in all SM1. As said before, the Kurasawa 2 mission can be very random, but the Gwenhyva takes a lot of skill to beat.

I've never beaten Kurasawa 2. I should probably try to do that.
When I beat this mission, I somehow managed to ram one or two of the Grathas without getting killed. I think that the trick was to ram the upside of the Grathas. If you fly into their center, your fighter will explode as well.

Yes, from my experience I believe this is the only way to win the mission - which is why it's vital you ignore the Salthi in the asteroids so your armor is ready for a beating when you go afterburn nose first into the Gratha.

Pulling a Maniac, eh?

Sometimes it's the only way ;)

Missiles is another key. They won't kill the Grathas, but the explosion often makes them abort the bombing run, giving you some time.

I've rammed a few Krants and Jalthi in my days to prevent losing capships. If you have shields and armor and you just have no choice, then you've already made your choice. Sometimes you just can't wait for the capacitor or missiles to splash the bandit. Especially if he's about to put the last missile in your charge's coffin.

Should be noted I saved the Kurasawa 2 Ralari with a ram once. Like I said, sometimes you can't wait for the guns. ^_^
