Finally first time Secret missions WOW IT HURTS

Wow. Blazed through WC1, as I have many times before. Was feeling pretty darn good. Started SM1, never played them before, finally got around to getting it set up.

What did the Kilrathi suddenly put five extra layers of tungsten on their ships? Did my lasers suddenly have a power drain? It's wayyyyyy different. I'm not a big fan of being called callsign CHEATER throughout the game by enabling invulnerability, but sheesh this is going to take awhile to try and get through! Going to keep plugging at it though for now. I can understand making the ships more aggressive or making more of them in the missions, but sapping my offensive ability to add difficulty is a cheap way to do it! It doesn't say these are Salthi or Krant Mk 2's or something...

Guess I have to get better...currently playing them on the Kilrathi Saga install...

The game certainly starts out tough by putting you in a Hornet against some massive firepower in the beginning. Fortunately, you do get put in some beefer ships a few missions in. The new Dralthi actually isn't so bad, and there's some missions where you should follow orders and not engage in order to survive.

I just finished the first sector. I think the hornet had much to do with it, agree. New tactics - more afterburner snaps, strafing runs, and staying CLOSE to capitol ships so they ran into them on their own alot. Plus, added bonus, I watched some of their own missiles hit their ships as I kept diving in and out of them. Hunter got knocked off in the third mission, but looks like I'm in a scimitar now with Angel on wing. We'll see how it goes! I definately feel like I have to think a bit more, which is much more fun, frustrating, but not overly so. Now if those darn asteroids didn't keep jumping into my cockpit out of nowhere...I'm playing them from Kilrathi Saga (for some reason I can't get my SM to work in the GOG Dosbox versions of the games, after install it'll load SM then crash as soon as it gets to the claw - I played through WC1 just now via DOSBOX), not sure if it's that or the fact it's the secret missions but I find the asteroid fields are more treacherous now.

Yes, the downloadable Secret Missions are only for the Windows version of WC1 (Kilrathi Saga). GOG is still working out the details on the DOSBox WC1 Secret Mission releases...

I had the same experience playing the SNES Secret Missions. Don't worry, SM2's difficulty is MUCH worse! :D

On the plus side, be sure to check with the FAQs at the CIC for some great insight on any missions you're having problems with. The community will also be more than happy to help out.

Yeah, GOG operates in its own weird time system where everything takes way longer than it should. LOAF mentioned something the other day about an agreement. Let's hope they get them out to the fans soon!

Its funny how some games that come out today I can slowly grind out to completion on the "insanity" difficulty while a game made in 1992 or 1993 still has a mission or two I cannot beat to save my life.

Okay, WITHOUT THE CHEATS (I must of grinded into becoming a better player, yay afterburner slide again!), finished SM1, with three wingmen lost (but Knight made it and was actually helpful on the last sector) :). As time permits I'll delve into those terrifying escort missions and the fun that is SM2, based on the posts I'm seeing here! I don't remember the Special Ops for WC2 being that much more difficult than the base WC2 gameplay (I did play SO 1 and 2 back in 'the day').
