Eh, it may not be that simple. We have no idea what modification number the Epee, Broadsword, etc is in, but the Sabre has up to the G-variant (IIRC from End Run) so maybe, for example, the Sabre A-C didn;t have ITTS but Sabre D-G had it or something of the sort. Fighters today that have different designations can have whole different sets of electronics replacing the older technology. This doesn't explain why the Rapier which is in the G variant can't have a ITTS.

Why didn't they upgrade all fighters? It's a slow progress, I'd guess. Probably because the Empire of Kilrah would have pounced all over Confed if Confed pulled all of their Rapiers, Ferrets, Hornets, and Raptors off of the flightline to upgrade them to the latest spec.
 
You don`t have to pull out all figters at once if you want to upgrade them! All fighters need overhaul once at a time and minor upgrades are then made. Major upgrades are made gradually - one wing/squadron at a time. Maybe we just fly versions not yet upgraded.
 
I don't know, I was always a Broadsword kind of guy. It was slow and methodical but it was also a big mass of death. Guns to all sides, armor and sheilds galore, and enough torps to tag any big cats that came your general direction. It gave you a good feeling of power, the only other ship to really do that well I think is the Devestator.
 
I'd have to go with the Raptor. Twin Mass Drivers and Neutron guns, as well as enough missiles to blow up any target. Spirit and Angel fly it, which is cool, and it is the fighter that killed the Gwenhyvar. It was also the premiar fighter until they brought out the new Rapier. And we have Raptor craft today as well.

Iceman and Angel, not Spirit. Spirit flys a Hornet.
 
In Secret Missions you fly a Raptor with Spirit, and are charged with escorting the Drayman, set up an ambush, and rescue the Johann. (The Gwenhyvar). Spirit actually volunteers you for that one. :) You also fly one with Angel in the Border Zone and with Paladin in Bifrost. In the first one, you fly a Raptor with Angel in Gimile and with Knight in Dakota, if you remain on the winning track. You can also fly one with Iceman in Rostov. In Secret Missions 2 you fly a Hornet with Spirit again in Firekka C, with Hunter in Corsair B and woth Maniac in Charon.

Excellent point. The Devestator brought back what I liked about the Broadsword but found lacking in the Longbow--side turrets! With turrets on every side, you can blast anything that comes near you, slow turn rates be damned! The only drawback is when facing Drakhri fighters--they are fast and nimble enough to remain outside the range of your guns while shooting at you with their longer-range lasers.
 
The problem with the Devestator was that even though they had better range, they were only single barrel laser turrets, as opposed to kick-butt rapid fire neutron guns.
 
while that's true, the turrets on the devastator did a good enough job. When you took control of them, you could quickly convince any would-be attacker that it would be in his best interest to pick another target. That's what counts.
 
I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but don't we have enough "Favorite" whatever threads. But since we are on the topic, my favorite fighter is the Rapier. :D
 
The Rapier was cool when I first started flying it, and had no skills (I was eleven at the time). Once I aquired skill, I decided that I liked the Raptor a lot more. Good maneuverability, but not too quick. Great guns, good missile loadout (for back then), and shields that would allow you to play chicken with anything up to a gratha. . . or a Jalthi.

My favorite trick these days is to fly into a cluster of dralthi and unload on the lead one so quickly that he's debris before the other dralthis have time to scatter. The next one is just a matter of who's suicidal enough to take me on. Kinda like those five sartha in wc2 that try to intercept me in my ferret on that Niven mission. Suckers.
 
Morningstar (it looks really cool), with the Raptor a close second (big guns, lots of armor, and plenty of speed--you can't go wrong).

Probably my least favorite ships were the Hornet and the Epee. I felt naked flying those things. Oh, and the Broadsword sucks too--it's less maneuverable than the GTB Ursa from FreeSpace, it's not as well armed as the Ursa, and its uglier.

But if I could take Kilrathi ships, I'd fly a Gratha or a Jalthi.
 
Eh . . for kilrathi ships, I'd take a Krant. They seem to take quite the pounding before they give up the ghost . . . or one of the nine ghosts? . . . nevermind . .that was stupid.
 
Does anyone think the Rapier was overrated? I'd have traded the maneuverability for more armor and the mass drivers on a Raptor anytime.
