Fare Thee Well, GameTap (December 11, 2007)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
It's official: GameTap will remove Wing Commander I, II and IV from their service at some point today. The CIC staff would like to formally apologize to anyone who paid for the service beyond today believing they would be able to play Wing Commander. We genuinely believed that GameTap would offer an exciting new way for both old fans and new players to experience Wing Commander. This is a sad cap for what has otherwise been a universally excellent year for Wing Commander fans. You can remember the good times with our memorial retrospective archive, available here. Here's to hoping that another service licenses Electronic Arts' game catalog in the near future - they'll have my dollars.

Having WC on Gametap was great for introducing new people to the series, but it didn't offer anything new or unique for existing WC fans. It just took the game files and used DosBox on them. If you have your original DOS disks, there's nothing to stop you doing the same, regardless of which country you're in. And even if you don't have the disks, most games are readily available on ebay.

I can see why this might be frustrating to folks who only had access to the games through this and how it might hurt the perceived popularity of the game, but it's no big loss to those of us who already own the games anyway.

LOAF, were you using other games on Gametap, or did you have the account for WC specifically? Just seems odd that you'd shell out the cash when I'd bet the farm you've used DOSBox to play the games.

I did it to support the service - if I was going to tell other people they should play Wing Commander on GameTap, it seemed like I needed to too. Plus, I'm always up for a good excuse to revisit the games...

(I'm not at all alone in this, either - I know Chris bought GameTap as soon as they *announced* that Wing Commander was coming, more than a year before it actually did. His zeal was so much greater than mine in this.:))

I certainly applaud the efforts to revitalize the PC-side of the franchise. I barely even have time to play WC at all anymore, so I couldn't justify the cost, but the effort (both monetary and time) is appreciated.

It's not much different than buying both the Amazon Unboxed ( https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/7351 ) and IGN Direct2Drive ( https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/7523 ) versions of the WC Movie when you already have a dozen copies on DVD. Speaking of which, did you notice that Amazon's WC Movie DVD price went up to $9.99 since Unbox was unboxed?
