Everyone read this quick! (Academy in Windows)

Wing Commander Academy runs in windows, FULL WINDOWS 98!!!!!
privateer was made using the technology pioneered in academy and wc1 ,& 2, Would it be possible to modify the privateer files so that it will run in windows just like Academy? we could use some code from academy to do it!

!!!!!!!!!
You fell right....Are you smoking something??? :D
Are you sure that WCA runs in a DOS windows in W98 ???
You have see that or only a rumor ??

Everyone already knows that WCA runs in full Windows. And I'm afraid that even if you could get your hands on WCA code, it would be useless - what makes Priv incompatible with Windows is its memory management system; and that is something first introduced in Strike Commander, not Wing Commander.

How very unobservant of you :). Any Origin game pre-Strike Commander runs just fine in Windows. Well, at least any Origin game that I've tried.

Armada and Privateer don't work in windows because the versions of JEMM that they use for memory management don't work with windows memory management. Other versions of JEMM do work, but aren't compatible with the game, and are different enough that it'd be rather difficult to edit any of the files to make it work.

[edit] Oh, and don't make crazy uninformative topics in all caps please :( [/edit]

We could probably make something that would make JEMM work with Windows... but it really wouldn't make the game much easier to run... Plus, I don't know who would actually make it. It isn't a high priority on anyone's list, really.

It'd be great if we could...

Since a Windows version of Armada was made, presumably it's possible...

It's obviously possible... (though that was internal and they had the source...) the question would be if it's worth the trouble... Obviously, if someone wants to do it, I'd give whatever support I could.

A version of Armada was made at OSI with a fairly simple change in the source that would run in Windows. I highly doubt that anyone there has the files, though and it was never released.

Well why don't we ask someone there? Or one of the ex programmers? I don't think they'll be reluctant to release it, after all, its not a game's source now is it?

Ok If anyone tries to talk about Warez I will Flame their arse off. Now that that's said, what if we decompiled the .EXE ? I know someone who'd do it, If I then gave it to someone else to enable Privateer to run in windows, Is that Legal? I know a patch came out that made wc Prophecy run in windows 2000 recently, would EA mind? we would only distribute the .exe file not the rest of the software.

We could even make people send us a specific privateer file before we sent the exe back as a guarantee that they have the original file, the people doing the coding would already own Privateer.

I think we can release just the exe... *if* we can get it to work. If it were that easy, though, it'd probably already have been done...

Darkmage, were you inferring by that little comment that I was going to bring warez into this thread??? hmmm???

All I was talking about was the source for the executable, not the game as a whole!

I'm sure releasing the executable is *technically* illegal -- but it's something EA would definately not care about.
