Dosbox for downloaded WC1.

I know that some of you have some advanced computers that refuse to play WC1 on CD and your computer does not have a floppy drive. You can download the game (not giving websites names) and run it with Dosbox.

First, you download the game, it should come in a zipped folder. Click on it and in the folder there should be something in the folder called "WC" (if you click on properties it will say in there WC.EXE.) Click on it and it should say something about it being zipped, unzip it and click on install.

IMPORTANT: If you don't have Dosbox, download it before you continue. CIC has a link for it on the webpage.

Second, install how you want it (after you start the game and its not, just close Dosbox and reinstall.) Then start up Dosbox, this is where most people can get confused.

Third, once Dosbox is up and running you should see a _ flashing and to the left of it see Z:\ type in this: mount C: C:\WINGCO~1

Hit enter and it will say "local C: mounted as C:\WINGCO~1" after that type this in: C:
As soon as you do that type: WC.EXE

and it should begin loading up WC1 you might have to adjust the framskip by using Ctrl+F11 or Ctrl+F12

There you go WC1 ready to go.

Enjoy :)

Our tech support has more detailed walkthroughs for all the old games, although we left out the part where you pirate the game.

That's true. I have no idea what you're trying to say here.

Why did you think this was a good idea to post? Everyone with WC1 on CD should be able to get the game working on their modern computers with DOSBox. At the worst, all they'd have to do is copy the game over and perform a manual installation in conjunction with our Tech Support section walkthrough.

Manual Install
To manually install the game to your hard drive (and to get past the "JOIN.EXE" problem for Windows '95 users), you must first be in MS-DOS.
Change to your CD-ROM drive by typing the letter of the driver followed by a colon (eg. "D:")
On the CD-ROM drive, type "CD\WING"
From the D:\WING directory, type "XCOPY *.* C:\WING /E /S" to copy all files to your hard drive (about 18 megabytes, total).
Change back to the C: drive and change directory to the C:\WING directory (type "CD\WING")
While in the C:\WING directory type "EDIT WINGCMDR.CFG" and press enter.
In the MS-DOS text editor that follows, type "V A904 Z" and then save the WINGCMDR.CFG file to your hard drive.
Wing Commander 1 should now be ready to run!
(After copying the game off your CD and installing DOSBox, all you do is make a text file named wingcmdr.cfg with V A904 Z in it, then play)
