Difficulty of Standoff

Well, i'm starting to get better in the game (still with a mouse), and my survival rate has increased a little (specially since i started using the gladius instead of the stiletto). Still, i'll try the joystick. Is there any that you recommend?

Just me, but I use the Top Gun Fox 2 from Thrustmaster. Then again, I was very much used to my original Afterburner...had to buy a similar one when that one finally crumbled under the weight of my usage, and the Fox 2 is almost identical to the Afterburner, save that is has no throttle. Unfortunately, they don't make the Afterburner anymore, and the only one you can find in the Thrustmaster line that I'm aware of with a throttle is the Cougar HOTAS. Somewhere around $150 last I looked (though that was a while ago), I didn't feel like paying that much. But then again, I'm just picky. :)

Yep, the Sao Paulo is pretty painful to save without aid of the navmap - you have to hang around its engines and periodically check the nav map to see which bombers are targetting it.

Hmm...I just did visual scanning and taunted pretty much everyone that my targeting autolock locked onto. I figured that pretty much anyone who was going to take up position behind the Sao Paulo was in my kill zone and was, therefore, toast. Just me, but instead of concentrating on everyone else around the entire ship, I figure that it can be expected that the bridge can just be thrown away, but as long as the engines are intact, you're good to go. That saves a lot of kitty-chasing and the possibility of being drawn off, giving the bombers a relatively clear shot.

I guess I'm one of the few that hates using the NavMap...never had a use for it. I still just use the scanner and "manual scanning"...aka, eyeballs. :)

Standoff does an excellent job of almost forcing you to use the Navmap at some points. It is an under utilized feature that they have managed to incorporate nicely. I find myself using it more and more in WCP/SO since then as well because it can make hard missions a lot easier.

WCP/SO... hard missions? :p

heh...yeah. One mission that I can almost never clear in SO is the strike force escort where you're teaming up with a bunch of Thunderbolts and Excaliburs. They did a good job on that mission to throw enough Devil Ray fighters at you to keep you busy while everyone else gets picked off one by one from the sheer numbers that otherwise come along. I hate being engaged with two Devil Rays while I'm watching/hearing my Thunderbolt numbers dwindle.

I probably ought to try that at some point, then. I guess I just get too engrossed in either keeping my butt alive or taking down someone I've locked onto and choose my next victim from there. Might be something I need to incorporate into the thought process on a regular basis...

Hahaa!

Hey thanks guys,

I saved the Eastern European buzzcut guy on the Sao Paulo, awesome, just like you said, hung round that engine that wasn't damaged and made good use of the navmap. Thanks for the advice, now I got a lovely 'to be continued' screen so I can sit on my hands and wait patiently. Truly Awesome revival of wing commander, it's amazing the big companies don't take notice of the fact so many people are so committed to the genre and maybe pump out a few more Wing Commander titles, however I guess I'd be worried they'd commercialize the crap outta it and maybe take it in some god-awful Paul W.S. Anderson direction. Which would literally kill me and thousands of other loyal wing commander..ers? Anyways good stuff and thanks again!

Glad you enjoyed what we've got there so far, but now I'm afraid you will have to enjoy your last "To be Continued..." screen for a while longer. :p Not too long, though!

Now you can spend your time in the sim trying to get new high scores to send to the CIC's scoreboard. And if that's not enough can always get WCP MP up and running and drop in #wingnut to get a game going. Since I played the other day it's gotten me right back into it.
